Anyone W/plott Hound Insights Or Tips? Bought One Feb 8

More puppy pics.

The date stamp is wrong on this one. The batteries died and we changed them but wanted to get the shot before the baby or puppy moved from the cute shot.

I kneeled in front of the comp on the floor to check something quick and our little pup curled up in my legs

Passed out next to "daddy"

Foxy came over to check on him. She just sniffed him and then walked away.
*She's very protective of him. If the cat hisses at him she chases the kitty away..lol. Poor cat. That's how it was when Foxy came into the picture, so I imagine that they have to go through this stage.

Bad news everyone. He started throwing up this morning and had runny poo the night before. He was listless and sleeping too much. I took him to the vet at 3:20 this afternoon and had a faint positive for Parvo  Good thing he came w/free 30 days pet insurance with the adoption. The estimated costs are $800. With the insurance they'll cover up to $750 with a $75 deductible. The vet said he'll get worse before better. He's staying at the vet's office for a least 3 or 4 days. The vet guestimated 5 days. Here's good info on the virus: http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm

The pups only 7 weeks old and hasn't even had a chance to have all the vaccinations yet. He's had one round of them, but the parvo is 3 stages (I believe.) Really sucks. :-(

I guess the only good new is since we caught it early he has about an 80% survival rate.

thanks tucan

one more thing. I did call the rescue center and let them know about the diagnosis. Figured they'd like to know it's good for them to know.

Also, the vet said Foxy should be just fine. She's approx 4 years old and has had her shots every year.

oh no, Parvo...a friend of mine's dog had parvo and recovered but now has a "twitch". hope he makes it thru without side effects. he is a DOLL!

I lost a dog to parvo many many years ago, I had to actually stay home from school for 3 days and give sub que injections of saline to help her stay hydrated but she ended up dying anyways.

I'm hopeful since he's at the vets. They put an IV in him right away and are hydrating him and will give him anti-vomiting and anti-diareaha meds as needed. They said they can actually give a few calories that way to help his body get some protein to fight the illness. I'll go see him today. They said I could come see him anytime. I'll have to "suit up", though.

When we took him in he wasn't that bad yet. He only threw up once before we took him in. Vet said his dyration wasn't that bad and his skin still had a slight snap reaction when she pulled on it which was good. His nose was beginning to dry and she said his gums were a bit off, but overall he wasn't that bad. I'm hoping catching it early and giving him what his body needs right away will help him pull through. I'll go see him tonight.

Good news. They offered him food today and he ate it all. He has kept it down and is whining to get out of his cage. They said if he continues eating and keeping it down, they'll let him go home Thurs evening. :yahoo:

He whined like crazy when he saw me come in. Guess that's a good sign!! His left front leg is has the IV in it, so it was all taped up to keep the IV in. He also has one of those darn cones on. I know they're necesary, but I hate them and I'm sure he doesn't like it either. I stood at the front of his cage(couldn't take him out of it b/c of the IV) and he kept jumping up on me and seemed a lot more active than yesterday. So hopes are extremely high right now :D

I bet that's a lot of stress you didn't think you'd have to go through when adopting a puppy. Something gives me the feeling that he'll stay with you after the trial period is over.

I'm glad things are looking up, hopefully he'll keep on improving. He's absolutely gorgeous.

The trial period was over last Sunday and we did buy him :)

He came home today at 5:30pm. Doing great. Still on anti-poo poo meds to control the runs. He's on special food that's $2 a can  We needed 12 cans. It's for dogs that have intestional issues that need easier to digest food. I give him one can a day and after 9 days I can start mixing it w/his old food to switch back over.

He's chasing the cat at the moment  Cute as ever. Foxy wagged her tail when we brought him home. I still don't know what to name him for sure. Thinking of Hershey....

I totally forgot to point that out about hounds till I just read about you having to buy the special food.

my first hound, Boone, would eat like a hoover and end up throwing up alot of the time. what can be done to help with that is to cut back the amount of food and to mix it in with water but the biggest and hardest thing to do is then make sure that the dog doesn't do alot of strenous exercise after eating sort of like the waiting 30 mins before going back in the pool rule.

Lol @ hoover, my younger terrier has that nickname. The older guy used to eat more slowly before we got the pup, who will eat any food in sight. He sped up when he saw the pup suck up food like a shop vac. Neither is food aggressive, I worked on this from day one. They are the same way, eat too quickly, they might barf.

One trick for dogs that inhale food than puke is to turn the bowl upside down, so the dog is slowed down by having to work at getting the food out of the rim, with a big plastic bubble in the middle. If it is a solid bowl you can put an object in the center of the bowl that is too large for the dog to pick up, and place the food around it.

I did read that they shouldn't exercise for a bit after eating b/c it can do something with the intestines...twist them, maybe? I don't remember exactly what, but I'm going to adhear to the rule. Before he was sick, we were feeding him 3x a day. Was doing a half cup at a time. I'll ask the vet how much when he's back to his regular food and goes in for another vet check in about a couple weeks.

Ahhh he's jumping up on the couch  Teaching him to stay off the furniture and trying to curb jumping too. Can't have a grown 60lb dog jumping on people  People bowling

When it comes time, we'll take him to socialize w/other people and pets as well as do some obedience classes. I'll keep updating for anyone who wants to read, including pics every month or two. I'd like to be able to compare his growth and progress as well. I'm glad I work for a school system. I have 2 months off in the summer to spend w/my kids and pets.

Now he's "treeing the cat" again. Chased her to the lazy boy. She took refuge on back of the chair.

yeah the intestines and stomach are free floating as it is and the exercise will cause the intestines to wrap around the stomach killing the dog.

the jumping part can be hard with a hound but it is something good to teach them not to do. the socialization bit is very important my first hound hated little girls absolutly hated them.
