Ok call me Mr Impatient but I have been looking at a green test tube for too long!

Is there anyone in the Portsmouth region of UK Hampshire willing to let me have some gunky filter media to get me out of the green and into the yellow? Be much appreciated... :good:

if you still need any in 2 weeks il have some to donate. been waiting ages for my external filter to come

thanks littlenemo, been there but the hampshire guy seems no longer active here

thanks for your offer deftuch,...i'm in portsmouth; wonder if those bacs would make the trip? willing to give it a go though if i cannot source elsewhere so will take you up on the offer if still searching

note to mods; i would be willing to donate once up and running if the Hampshire dude has gone...?

How long would filter media last if I was to post some next day delivery?

I think I read somewhere that it will only last a couple of hours? and obviously has to stay wet and is temperature sensitive...have tried several local LFSs but they can't seem to provide due to the constant flow systems they use...I have one more to try tomorrow. I didn't think I would have such a problem finding a mucky filter to 'borrow' from; gold dust here it seems!

I've read that bacteria without a food source will die off at around 10% over 24h(roughly) A few people on here know the specifics. As long as its kept wet the temp shouldn't be an issue.

Add a few fish flakes in a wet bag and post.

I've sent cycled media to people lots of times, generally with good results.

I wrap some ceramic ring with old filter floss, in a sealed fish bag, in a jiffy bag, with a small amount of water and plenty of 'mulm' and sent next day delivery.

thanks for the advice folks...and thanks mtbdean...if you are up for it just PM me and I will paypal you the cost and give you my address!

just added some sub-gravel gunk from a more traditional LFS without centralised filtration...fingers crossed for that then...and he has Dempseys so now I'm really itching to go!

Bacterial samples are amazingly able to survive shipping stresses. I have even gone so far as to ship microworms to Canada from the US, which of course included border inspection times. The microworms arrived and thrived for the recipient. Bacteria are even easier to ship, IMO. I would almost be willing to bet that a sample from the US would arrive in the UK in a reasonable state for immediate use.

thanks everyone...day 14 of the fishless and ammonia has dropped this morning, 2 days after dirty LFS water added - reading 1ppm...nitrites look 5+ppm though hard to read on API chart over the 4ppm, but definitely higher than original readings...re-checking both this afternoon. So it looks as though its kicked off?

Am following rdd1952's pinned post - am keeping a log of actions/readings which I will post once the cycle is done (read on here somewhere that this is useful as a referrence for other such newbies as myself?)
