Any Jewel Tank Owners Added Additional Internal Filters?

Hi All ,
I am unhappy with the filtering from my Jewel Rekord 120 tank . I bought this tank to replace a 48" tank that took up up too much floor space by getting this tank allowed it to be fitted on a built in shelf so clearing the tank from the floor . My old tank used a Fluval external filter and the water was always very clear . I find on the Jewel that the water isn't as clear and the filtering of the water is less effective ( the price i pay for the floor space ) . I am now unable to use an external filter so was considering using an aditional internal filter like an Ehiem Aquaball . Have any you guys tried anything similar or can recommend your favourite internal filter i'd be pleased to hear from you .

Hi I have a Trigon 190, and have added a internal fluval 4 (old version i believe) to help with the filtration, as i keep discus they can be pretty messy, it sits pretty near the corner filter, I just have it hanging there, it certainly seems to help.

I'm just about to get rid of a Juwel tank after about 6 years of ownership. Always used the original filter but have to admit, compared to the Eheim external that I am using on my new tank, it was disappointing. I kept it originally because the turnover was quite low which (at that time) was recommended for planted tanks.

I think what may happen, is the fine filter pad clogs up quite quickly, reducing flow. I had thought about changing the order of the sponges. If you think about an external filter, the water passes throught a coarse mechanical layer first, then coarse foam, then biological, finally a fine filter to polish the water. In the Juwel, you could try putting the fine filter at the bottom, followed by the fine sponges, followed by the coarse sponges. If you leave out the carbon, you could try and find a way of dropping some ceramic tubes on the very top.

I would also try to get a more powerful pump too (if such a thing exists to fit the Juwel.

No idea if either of these will work, but I see no harm in trying. The filter foams will still mature and could continue to be used in the "Juwel" order if the unconventional approach fails to produce the results.

First thing i did with my Juwel was rip out the internal filter and replace it with an Eheim Ecco 2236

really? i've always found the juwe filters to be ample for the size of tank (unless you want a lot of fish)

granted on my Vision 450 i have an ehiem Pro 2 as well as the internal. but on my Rekord 120 i just use the internal filter.

yeah loads of people have problems with the filters. we bought our juwel tank 2nd hand and they'd already ripped out the internal

we currently have fluval and rena externals and 2 small internals running on the tank, it does house an Oscar and a common plec though so it needs all the filtration it can get.

it's easy enough to just get another filter and sit it in the tank in another corner

i ripped mine out. and replaced it with an external
personally i hate the black box in the corner of my tank, but if you can hide it then thats ok.

Thanks for the reply . I wish i had ripped it out to be honest before stocking the tank . I was also looking at the Fluval 3 internal filter but was only looking at the Aquaball after reading a favourable review .

Wish i had done that too but now find after a few months that it's too late so hence the reason for wanting to add another internal filter . Just don't have the room to fit the hoses that go with the external filter . I'm not too sure if you can add a more powerful powerhead to the Juwel filter system . I saw Juwel power heads in a supplier store and the were not a cheap item . I would be less costly to buy a new internal filter . I am considering adding an addition internal filter like the Aquaball or the Fluval 3 and maturing it in the tank then removing the Juwel system all together . But then running a second filter may be the better option . Thanks for the reply .

Thanks for the reply . I think my problem is i am unhappy with the water as there seems to be particles suspended in the water all the time . I didn't have this with the external fluval .

Wise move having the filter already removed . Thanks for your thoughts . Unfortunately i can't have any external filter system as i have almost no clearance on 3 sides of my tank . Thats the reason for wanting advise and thoughts on the internal filters . Thanks for the reply .

Don't have a problem wioth the black box just feel the quality of it's filtering is naff.

My friend's Rekord 60 filter is really quite bad so he's now running a little Eheim internal in there and he says it's done great, much better.
Ive found the filter in my Rekord 70 to be fine. It's done very well for a few years now.
Then again the filter in my Juwel Rio 125 is poor, bits are always floating about until I fitted a Supafish external to the tank and the water is crystal clear now.

My friend's Rekord 60 filter is really quite bad so he's now running a little Eheim internal in there and he says it's done great, much better.
Ive found the filter in my Rekord 70 to be fine. It's done very well for a few years now.
Then again the filter in my Juwel Rio 125 is poor, bits are always floating about until I fitted a Supafish external to the tank and the water is crystal clear now.

Hi Radar , Thanks for posting . I don't have any other options other than another internal filter . It was an Ehiem i was looking at ( Aquaball ) though i was originally going to add under gravel filtration but that seems to bring it's own probs .

You still can remove the Juwel filter box even with water in the tank if you want to. All you would need to do is buy a replacement filter and get it running for a few weeks so that it and the juwel run together. Once done buy a divider for the tank containing all the fish to one end.

Then at the other end remove the juwel filter and heater etc, then carefully cut the box off. Once complete and cleaned up remove the divider and watch as the fish explore a whole new area of the tank.

Yeah that's still an option to remove it all together . I see you use an Aquaball filter , how do you find this filter performs as it's the one i'm considering using ? Cheers .

Its remarkably good actually, i was expecting the hype to be a litte more than the filter could match, but currently im well impressed. Its actuall runing as a cycle filter in my new tank 28l Aqua One. But cleared the water in no time at all when i added the filter water and squeezings from the main tank to it.

Thanks DarkEntity for the reply and info it's appreciated . I think i'll give one of these filters a go as they seem very good . I like the Aquaone one tanks very nice and stylish but impractical for me personally though would have loved one . Thanks again .

iv still got the juwel filter in mines, i did find it was a little pants ass there was a few bits floating about, instead of using the white filter pads i stuffed the top of the filter with filter wool and its been sooo much better, works out cheaper too lol
