Hello everyone! This is my first post here, and I'm sorry to have that first impression being one of begging for advice, but I'm in a tiny pickle that somehow turned into three paragraphs of words. Sorry.

I've had a 55g with three Orandas for almost two years now, and it's getting a little lonely. So I've been looking for tank mates. Research suggested my selection is very limited since goldfish are such dirty fish, and many compatible fish will nip their fins, but a Corydora school is apparently an option! I keep my tank very clean (and it has driftwood for them), so I think they can be happy.

So, I finally decided to get a small school of them--aiming for 3~5. I went to Petco and saw three mis-marked trilli corys [I fell in love. They are so adorable!], but one looked incredibly stressed. I really didn't want to throw money on a fish that looked beyond help, so I asked the employee to get me the remaining two. Upon coming home, I very disappointingly realized she caught the troubled one. It was nearly impossible to tell in the bag since both of them were stressed at that point. :(

Now that I have him, I wanted to see if there's anything I can do to try to help him out. He has no visible signs of diseases or anything being wrong, but he's in 100% panic mode (even his cory friend scares him to death), he ignores food, and just sits at the bottom of the tank breathing very hard--like he was doing at Petco. He's slightly darker than his friend, but that's about all I have noticed. Within 10 minutes of being released into my aquarium, the healthy one was happily looking for food and swimming around with my orandas. He doesn't want to be around the stressed Cory at all. I really wanted to get him out of my aquarium since I'm afraid he does indeed have something, but the only thing I can do is put him in a small filtered 2.5 gallon tank (it was for a betta). That size is cruel, even if it's just supposed to be a hospital tank. Plus, I am not sure if I should be medicating him in some way. I completely understand this is a shot-in-the-dark, but I was hoping to find out what you experienced fish hobbyists would do in this situation.

(p.s. I realize I'm taking a big risk putting fish straight into my aquarium, but I have no other alternatives and I *very* rarely get new fish. Broke college student, etc. It can't be helped! Does anyone EVER have a good experience buying from chain pet shops? :))

I have 5 of those corys...same thing happened to me..and sometimes petco/petfun uses copper to have em alive..and once they are bought by people like us..and go into non copper water..may takes a bit to get adjust to the new whole setting..they could take anywhere from a day or so to start accepting food..and as corys are bottom feeders and night timers..may not see active as well...try to get them some sinking algae pellets..and mines took a while before they started roam freely too..and hiding spaces will be effective for them..

and as far as taking the cory out..it would be fine unless you see like white stuff on them or something..

75 gallon,ehim filter for 80 gallon
15 tiger barbs
6 tetras
2 panda cory

You can certainly put the sick cory in the 2.5g for now; add some of your mature media though to prevent ammonia spikes. I can't really suggest any treatment atm; it's difficult to pin down with those symptoms; it could be anything.

I'm afraid cories are not suitable tank mates for goldfish; goldies are really species tanks only, although I have heard of bristlenose plecs being kept with them. The cories need a heater; they can't survive the lower temperatures in an unheated tank.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

I see. Well, it's not too late for me to bring them back to Petco. I did have a mostly good experience keeping bristlenoses with them, although I did turn them out into a pond after I didn't have enough algae in the tank to keep them happily grazing. My orandas would eat their algae wafers before the bristles could.

Whereabouts do you live, Nausky?

South Louisiana. My family has a rather massive goldfish pond back at home.

Looks like you have a beautiful tank. :)
That's interesting to hear about the copper water. Petshops scare me!

yea..petco/petsmart are the one of the worst places you can buy stuff from...try to yelp some local pet stores...would be better ;) and thanks and good luck to your corys!

Heh, unfortunately we have NONE of them around here. They all closed down years ago, leaving Wal-mart as the only fish dealer within 40 miles. I had to go pretty far just to get to Petco.

Edit:

Before I give up and bring this little duo back to Petco, is the temperature the only thing wrong here? If anything, my Orandas are in slightly warmer water than they should be in. The tank sits at 75 degrees (room temp), which as far as I am aware is fine for Corys. I have a heater laying around the house that could be used to help stabilize the temp if they're more sensitive than my goldies.

Not necessarily...they get bad reviews due to untrained staff and wanting higher profit margins...but i've known local lfs being just has bad has a chain like you mentioned.

Personally i wouldn't keep goldies & corys in the same tank, goldies being cold bloodied wont help by putting a heater in for the corys, has the goldies will then get stressed..
Goldies are major poo machines and wee cories being bottom dwellers may pick up infections if the bottom isn't kept clean...plus corys prefer to be in groups 6+ all in all not compatible at all

Hi Nausky :)

I wouldn't hesitate to keep C. trilineatus in a tank with goldfish unless they would make the tank overcrowded (now or in the near future) or the substrate was unsuitable for them. Corydoras have traditionally been kept with goldfish. You do have to keep the bottom vacuumed clean.

C. trilineatus, like a number of corys, like cool temperatures and 75 degrees is toward the high end of their range. C. paleatus is another one that likes cooler water and are often kept with goldfish.

Why not go back to the store and get that third cory as well?

Trie frozen peas and thaw them remove the shell, that kinda seems to help fish when they are stressed out.
