I've scoured the forums trying to figure out which pumps seem to be the quietest.

I don't mind the bubbles and water noise, but the buzzing of the airpump is too much. I've made sure that it isn't vibrating against anything... I've even picked the pump up and held it up by the eletrical cord and it is tooooo noisy.

My current pump is a Hagen Elite 800. It's piped to a 4way distribution valve, feeding two air stones and the undergravel filter. The fourth outlet is plugged. This is for a 10 gallon tank.

Looking at the forums I found that the Rena brand was suggested many times, so I picked up a Rena 50. It's just as loud as the Hagen. Back to the store it went.

Nothing else on the shelf really looked like it would do any better and I didn't recognize any of the brand names. I'm planning to try another couple of stores in the next few days and was hoping to hear some suggestions.

I'm going to be looking for a Whisper or Teratech pump... Anything else I should look for? Do the larger pumps run louder to move more air, or does the larger size mean that they don't work so hard and are quieter?

I use a Precision but not sure if they are available over there.
Rena are very good pumps but expensive.
Whisper are pretty quiet but not that powerful.
Hagen Optima are pretty good.

My preferred option is the Rena if you can afford one.

Well, I did try a Rena 50 but it was almost as loud as the Hagen 800 that I had.

I bought a Tetra 10 yesterday and it is SOOOO very much quieter. I don't even notice that it's running!

good to hear you found a quiet pump. There must be something about Rena air pumps in other parts of the world. The ones we have here are dead quiet. Maybe ours are older models and you lot have the newer ones :)
