Yesterday, after much research, I got a Marineland Penguin 100 filter. Installed it today and it is making more than enough noise to get on my nerves.  It is fairly loud in the room where the tank resides and the noise almost goes away anywhere else but the key word there is almost

.  The biowheel is not the source (I checked that first) and the water level is finally high enough that it doesn't make much of a splashing/trickling noise anymore.  It has this incredibly loud humming/grinding noise but I don't know why

.  All of the components fit correctly and the pump should be taking enough water so my question is: what the heck is wrong with this filter???  Please help.

Make sure the lid is seated correctly so it doesn't rattle.  From reviews I read it can get quieter with time.  The sound of the my penguin filter is more of a hum than a grinding noise which bothered me at first but i got used to it and it doesn't bother me at all now.

I really like the penguin I have as it has really good flow and you can put additional media in the filter compartment.

Thanks for the replies. The sound was extremely harsh at first (could be heard from other rooms on a different floor) but now that is done with. The last time I tried one external filter it made so much noise and didn't break in that the project failed before it had even begun.  Now there is a very loud splashing noise that it makes.  I will just make an ornamental rock/driftwood with plants to deflect the water flow so it doesn't make noise.
