Announcement Section?

Though I can see it's a very grey area that can easily be abused or interpreted in any which way as an excuse for GC.

Either that, or nothing. But for individual mods to choose which General Chat posts to stay or close isn't fair.

I can speak a few, but I thought this was fairly clear And in fact, I do entirely agree with you and Andy. However - bottom line is that what's going on isn't fair play is it?

It's a bit like "lets have a rule (no GC), but at the end of the day you can try and post a GC announcement (or thread about avatars / our usernames etc. in a section it was clearly not designed for) and if a mod (s) deem your topic worthy/interesting enough, it can stay. Then again, it may not "

Now I know free reign GC will quite likely never come back (it wasn't even here when I joined) but just perhaps a Personal Announcement section of sorts might be a "safe" middleground??

someone proudly announces they have given birth,
someone else reading this has been trying to get pregnant for years or worse for some medical reason can not have children
could you just be adding salt to their wounds?

Now this (in my opinion) is part of Political Correctness gone mad. Should live in fear of saying / not saying something just because it may offend someone - even if offence wasn't intended or directed?

And how sad would life be if we only ever had ourselves to personally congratulate on a personal significant accomplishment?
Of course no one should need a random person's pat on the back at an accomplishment to feel that that accomplishment is valid.
But in general, people want to share joy and it can't be denied that there is a community on TFF.

I see no need for a Members Announcement board - which will quickly turn in to a GC forum

If (for example) someone wants to show off there new sprogg, then put a pic in the Non-Fish Photo Forum, Ok this wouldnt work for all announcements but the rule is NO GC, I dont like that it but thems the rules as passsed down by William

But in saying that I do think this forum does suffer for not having a GC forum but there is simply no point moaning & bitching about it it just is not going to happen

I also cannot understand why this topic is raises it head almost weekly, the decsision was made & is apparently a firm one - Surely that should be the end of it

To be fair to Bloo, this is a different slant on the usual "Why isn't there a GC?" thread, as I am sure you will agree.

I am broadly in favour of such an area. It would certainly add to the community. But without first setting out the things which warrant going into it we end up in the same situation we have now, which Bloo has described, where some threads which a couple of mods like get to stay, and others don't. There is no common guideline on what goes and what doesn't, and without first addressing that we will soon be in the same position (as Bloo has also noted).

But what is wrong with real life friends and family? People to interact with in real life, not through a keyboard and a moniter. If something important happens to me I am off telling my friends and family. The last thing on my mind is to tell some people that keep fish (99.999% of whom I will never meet) about what has happened to me.

As I said, I have nothing against an announcements forum. It wouldn't be for me and as such I wouldn't look at it (just like I ignore the cichlids, planted and bettas areas), though I do wonder about the true motivation about wanting to post up the "achievements" and whether those that congratulate do so only in the hope of reciprocation later on when it is their turn to post.

However, that leads us on to a more philosphical point on how existent true altruism is, and that is certainly general chat area.

Thanks Andy - indeed. Callell, you may not know this, but I was the person who probably spoke loudest for longest to finally get the thread about "No GC" pinned - in light of the usual "why do not have a GC secion" question posed on a weekly basis

I really think this is stupid. Either this is a family forum which to me indicates we have families, or this is a fish only forum.

If it is a family forum why can't there be an area for our personal announcements.

If it is a fish forum then all of the general sections must go as they do not concern fish.

If you don't want to read about peoples announcements then don't read the thread. Problem solved.

To be honest i think that even if we did draw a line then i think people would still be unhappy about it, or not understand the rules, and there would be loads of 'suggestions' saying "i think we should be allowed to announce.......in the announcement forum".

So, to be honest, in my opinion, we shouldnt have one at all, its more trouble than its worth, not everyones going to be happy with the rules, and i just think it would be getting a bit picky anyway to have such specific areas. After all, its a fish forum, anything that sways off the fishkeeping subject shouldnt really be here anyway, these forums arent really meant for these kinds of announcements.

Surely if youre so desperate to announce something then you have friends you want to announce it to anyway? I dont see why you cant just tell your friends via PM, maybe you have each others e-mail/IM addresses? And if you dont have any specific friends then I dont see why you would want to announce such things to thousands of people you barely know anyway.

Ironically there are loads of people that are moaning about not having an announcement forum who never come into TFFs own chatroom! The chatroom is like one live announcement forum, I go in there pretty much daily, and you can talk about general things in there. I know the link at the top of the page is down, but if you look through various subjects in this section then there are many ways to get in through IRC (mIRC being an example which i have never had any trouble with). And maybe trying to get the link fixed would be a more worthy cause?

The general announcements in this forum have often been having photos attatched, so why not put it in the pictures forum??? is it just to kick up a fuss or something? As suzie said if youve just had a baby then whack a picture in the post and post it in non fish pictures.

well yeah maybe we should feel lucky that we have those sections at all, but the difference is those sections have very specific lines drawn that cant really be crossed.

Evem if we did draw a line then people would always go over it and be unhappy with it, the difference is you cant really cross the line in the pets section, a pet is a pet. Similarly with the hobbies, a sports a sports, and arts an art.

Yes, an announcement is an announcement but then anything can be classified as an announcement, it would just get into general chat again.

I personally think that we should just fix the link and use the chatroom, at the moment you are asking for something that is already there as a chatroom.
