Although I am relatively new to fih keeping, we kept fish when I was little and I have always had the belief that Angelfish are not at all angelic and can be quite vicious, so when me and my partner were stocking our tank I wasn't keen to get any! However he wanted some larger fish rather than all small fish, and so we asked the staff, who told us we could have angels with our neons, as the neons were quite big, and so they would grow together and it would be fine!

We have had our tank complete with all the fish for about 4 or 5 months now, and had no problems regarding fish attacking each other..until this week! One neon died about 2 weeks ago, but he was looking very poorly beforhand, as we're currently treating for fungus, I put the death down to this. Then on Monday my partner found another dead half eaten neon so we fished him out, and last night I saw the angel attack a neon and kill him! So I think I've found the answer of neon deaths, and am expecting that now he's started the rest won't survive long.

I felt so bad seeing him being killed, I couldn't watch. My question is although I have heard angels will do this, why is it that he's only just decided to start eating them, after they've been happy together for several months? The angel doing it is the one who is suffering with fungus, could it have anything to do with this?

Unfortunatly we don't have any other tropical tanks, so I can't move the rest of the neons out of the tank. All we have is a small 25l tank, but it doesn't have a filter or heater or anything (it was my old goldfish tank, which had to be replaced due to rapid goldfish growth!).

Would appreciate any replies, obviously we won't be keeping neons with angels again, and would like to get something more appropriate once the fungus problem is sorted. Any advise about what fish would be nice to keep with them? We also have guppies and 5 lined barbs.

Thanks, Penny.

angels eat neons in the wild. the reason he's just started probably has something to do with reaching a certain size compared to the neons. Another trouble is neons can be nippy and may well have pestered the angel towards violence. With this combination it was really only a matter of time.

I don't know a great deal about angels, but i've heard that if the fish is larger than a neon it *should* be safe so depending on the size of those guppies and barbs they may not be viewed as food.

the angel has probably just grown to a size where he can fit a neon in his mouth... so eats them...

i`m afraid its that simple

Well I did think that maybe the angel has reached its "adult" phase, but although they have grown since we got them, he hasn't grown very much recently, so I was just a bit confused by his sudden liking to neons!

Also I don't think he can fit the neon in his mouth, he was nipping at its tail, then biting its side until it died. Surely it could do that with any sized fish? He doesn't bother the guppies, and the barbs can stick up for themselves I think, as no fish seems to bother them!

I think you may have a point with the neons annoying the angels though, as I think they used to go round him annoying him and stuff. So maybe he's just had enough!

I guess its nature, but I don't like witnessing it in my tank!

end of the day dear the neon will get eaten. take them back to the LFS. i`d keep an eye on the guppys too

I had the same experience with Neons and Angelfish. I wasn't aware of the fact that Angels like to munch on Neons, but this is not always the case. Some people haven't had any problems mixing the two together, but it would be wise not to try. Stay away from agressive fish like Tiger barbs, they'll constantly pester the Angelfish. I have Rummynose Tetras with my Angelfish without any problems.

I have neons and rummy nose tetra with my angel fish with no problems. The neons are big and mature though, so maybe thats why.
Yeah ours are quite big now, and our angels were very small, which is why the shop said they would be fine together! We have 2 marble angels as well who are very placid and don't bother any fish, but this one is a white/grey coloured angel. So I guess it does depend on the fish.

I guess it's all a learning experience though. There aren't any set in stone rules it seems! We hope to move house in the near future and then will be able to have several tanks, so will have neons with small fish in a tank on their own then, as neons are lovely fish, it just seems that the angel also has the same thought! Poor things.
