Although I am relatively new to fih keeping, we kept fish when I was little and I have always had the belief that Angelfish are not at all angelic and can be quite vicious, so when me and my partner were stocking our tank I wasn't keen to get any! However he wanted some larger fish rather than all small fish, and so we asked the staff, who told us we could have angels with our neons, as the neons were quite big, and so they would grow together and it would be fine!
We have had our tank complete with all the fish for about 4 or 5 months now, and had no problems regarding fish attacking each other..until this week! One neon died about 2 weeks ago, but he was looking very poorly beforhand, as we're currently treating for fungus, I put the death down to this. Then on Monday my partner found another dead half eaten neon so we fished him out, and last night I saw the angel attack a neon and kill him! So I think I've found the answer of neon deaths, and am expecting that now he's started the rest won't survive long.
I felt so bad seeing him being killed, I couldn't watch. My question is although I have heard angels will do this, why is it that he's only just decided to start eating them, after they've been happy together for several months? The angel doing it is the one who is suffering with fungus, could it have anything to do with this?
Unfortunatly we don't have any other tropical tanks, so I can't move the rest of the neons out of the tank. All we have is a small 25l tank, but it doesn't have a filter or heater or anything (it was my old goldfish tank, which had to be replaced due to rapid goldfish growth!).
Would appreciate any replies, obviously we won't be keeping neons with angels again, and would like to get something more appropriate once the fungus problem is sorted. Any advise about what fish would be nice to keep with them? We also have guppies and 5 lined barbs.
Thanks, Penny.
