I posted on the newbe forum for advice because my fish are dying at a rapid rate. The most visible sign/symptom is that their tails have rotted away. I have now lost nearly all the guppies at an alarming rate.I did a nitrite test that was clear. On the aquarium shops advice I have started a course of MELAFIX but the symptoms/circumstances described for Chilodonelle cyprini in Andrew post are almost identical. Should I continue with the MELAFIX. Please can you advise me??

Sorry I'm so new to this ..this was my original post-http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/321069-my-fish-are-dying/

Is there a blue greyish film on the fish.
Any signs of darting, erratic swimming, flicking and rubbing, laboured breathing.

Lost any fish to being skinny, bloated, bent spine.

Thank you for responding..There did appear to be a greyish shiny tinge although the colours were still very bright (blue guppys. The baby guppys that are left are all at the surface of the tank and yes a couple have bent spines. Yes they are/were darting and flickering. The platy's were rubbing and have white stringy waste. I think one of them already had that when I got it but other than that the platys seem ok. So far its the guppys that have died

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Bent spine can be old age, injury, birth defect, vitamin deficiency, fish tb, internal parasites.Any adult fish with bent spines.

Signs of internal parasites are.
Long stringy white poo, or clear mucas poo.
Worms prutruding from the anus.
Fish will look skinny or bloated.
Enlarged anus, or red inflamed anus.
Bent spine sometimes.
Sunken in belly.
Fish will sometimes swim on its side.
Fish will flick and rub sometimes with internal parasites.
Spitting food out.

Need to look at water stats for the greyish film on the fish.

I now realise that the fish were overcrowded. The tank is 12x15x36 inches. approx.21.5 galls. They were transfered from a 12x12x24 inch tank where they had been for years.

There was a lot of guppys but now only 2 left and a couple of tiny babies. also left in the tank 4 platys and 6 little fish with a stripe along the side and illuminious red over the eye. There is 1 big pleco. They dont look too well!

I bought NUTAFIN NITRITE TEST and according to the instruction guide white - pink reading was ok.
Should I buy other kits to do those other tests you mention?

The MELAFIX I have been putting in the water does not appear to be having any effect at all, should I continue with it?

I can see no sign of parasites or worms.

The distinctive thing is how quickly their tails have rotted and vanished, almost immediately and within a few hours they're dead

It really is alarming. almost like MRSA I would appreciate any advice.

Need full water stats i'm afraid.

Don't like the nutrafin test kits as the colour chart all pink and hard to tell which reading it is.

Take a sample of your water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

Pleco are also massive waste producers.
