Well I have had a tank for about 2 years (has 2 tanks years ago) with this new one is quite large so i thought i would put some angel fish in it to start, i got 6 of them and they grew quickly and ended up fighting all over the place and stressing out the other fish, i took four back to the lfs then one must have got upset at this and died - thus leaving me with one.

so the story starts

I like neon tetra's as they brighten up any comunity tank, have bought about 40 in the last year or so and they just disappear, as there is lots of hiding places and thay are no big i assumed that the lfs sold me "duffers" and thought no more on it, have read over the last week on here that neon's are Angel fish's main diet  - guess what my angel is FAT !!! and now i know why, what a foolish lad i am, shame that the lfs (both infact) do not tell you this fact when you ask them. :look:

O well, i have another 4ft tank that i have had ages and going to set that up at work and eventualy transfer the angel to it and get neons at home.

At least now you know so you wont make that mistake again! :D I bet your angel fish was a happy camper for a long time though and will not be pleased that you found this information out!

Yep, neons are the staple diet of many fish in the wild. Angles love 'em.

I have a couple of ChacaChaca catfish, I leaned recently that their natural food in the wild is bettas!

From this thread, and plenty of others before this, I read "ALL Angel fish eat Neons" and I'm sorry but I don't agree.

Although I accept that some Neons find themselves to be a quick snack, I've never had an Angelfish eat a Neon for as long as I've kept fish. My fully grown Angels are kept with a variety of tetras (Neons, Platinum Tetras, Glowlights etc) and I haven't lost a single one to a hungry Angelfish. I also have a very aggressive Angel in another tank with small barbs and he's never shown any inclination towards having his tank mates for lunch.

I think it depends on the individual fish and the environment that the fish has come from.

Well all i can say is that i have one Fat ganit of an angel fidh

Hope that the other angel doesn't die on you. 8)

Daveo :flex:

There are always exceptions to the rule but Angels in general eat Neons and other small fish. No getting around it. The fact it's their main diet in the wild ought to prove that.

Still, there's always someone with some "but that's not true" story. :)

I'm not trying to dispute the fact that big fish will eat little fish but rather than say "All Angelfish will eat Neons! THIS IS A FACT!!!", I would say "It's not uncommon for Angelfish to eat Neons".

It's probably safe to say that a baby Angelfish brought up with Neons as tank mates isn't likely to eat them when he grows up, but like I said - it depends on individual fish.

The only reason I made this point is that time and time again I read about people who give away their much loved pets due to generalised information. Sometimes I think that people should accept a little more responsibility for the advice that they offer as there are lots of novice fish keepers who visit this forum and follow advice blindly.

Don't be so quick to dismiss opposing opinions.

IME this is very true

I agree. My angel lived with neons for like 4 yrs and never ate 1. They were put in as babys together though. And my angel is the most docile fish Iv ever seen.

I find it a stretch that even being raised with Neons will stop a Angel from eating them but it must be possible since some of the members are so adament about it.

How common is it for Angels to be raised with Neons though? It gives a false sense of security to go and say not all Angels will eat Neons and then some poor newbie comes along and does it but doesn't realize that little caveat. :)
