Down a dark hole... Down a dark hole... with an ow
Hi there,

My LFS has just introduced a product called Amquel + into its range of water treatment products.

As you probably know it claims to remove Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates and also removes chlorine etc as well as conditioning the water.

It also claims not to damage mature filters, which i am a tad confused at as if the bacteria have nothing to feed on, they will die off?

Has anyone had any experience with tis product, do you recommend it, can we use it to remove Nitrates from tap water when doing water changes, without damaging our filter/s?

Any thoughts, experiences or ideas post here!

Thanks

hi i had a big problem with nitrit and used amquel + nitrit readings went down from max to only just reading in less than 2 hours and saved the life of 3 fish ( shame aboult the one that died befor i got the stuff ) but i dont know if it had any efects on the filter or not.

regards alastair

I think - now dont quote me on this!! what it does it change ammonia, nitrite, nitrate into a different chemical form that is NON TOXIC to fish but still MUNCHIES for our friendly nitrifying bacteria so this is how the cycle carrys on but dont forget - there still there and nitrate will still be building up and heaven forbid if you forget to buy some more stuff because if your tank isnt cycled and you dont do a water change im pretty sure they will break back down from their new chemical states into ammonia and boom! spikage!!!

Dunno how long that'd take but this is my view on the product

However i want to get some to try it out - sounds useful for those who've suffered a crash or are trying to rid tap water of nasty high nitrates!

And possibly useful for betta's as it will pro-long the time between water changes - however them good minerals in the water aren't replenished so - its good - then its bad :)

Personally I give it a  - if it works

Hello,
I tried amquel+ because I have 10ppm nitrates coming out of the faucet, and wanted to see if would work. After filling up a bucket and adding it, after 24 hours there was no change in the nitrate level. Also used it on one of my tanks which was at 40ppm, and after 3 days, no drop. So I haven't had any luck with it as a nitrate remover, but I still use it as a dechlorinator because it removes both chlorine and chloramines.

Here is a link to their web page with the data sheet:

Hope it works for you.

thanks everyone for your views......

had a read through of the website (thanks Tandor :) ) and it seems that it cant do any harm to give it a go. no negative comments-YET! plan to pick up some on my next visit to my lfs. if anyone else has anymore to say please do, I really don't want to interfere with my cycle and as much as I love my fish i'm not into wasting money!

thanks again :D

i think that a water change is the solution and the less chemicals u use the better. it's like me giving you anti-viral drugs just for a cut, pointless unless ur levels are v.high and if it's just ur tap water then use RO water it's loads better.
