Ammonia

ok so on them measurments you have 142 ltr in your tank take in to acount yout substrate plants etc which means you need around 7 to 7.5 ml of ammonia to raise your ammonia to 5ppm test daily for ammonia and when it drops to 0 do same then test for nitrites to. takes awhile before its all dropping to 0 in 12 hours mine took 6 weeks and kepp a log and write down time day etc and what the readings are

I recently used the calculator for my 260 litre but it slightly overdid it, possibly as there was a trace of ammonia in the tapwater...might I suggest that, unlike me, you don't add the recommended doseage all at once but maybe go close but under for the first addition and see how it reads the next day? It would have worked for me anyway..

Scroll up to the top of the forum and click calculator on the blue bar -

Depends on the size of your tank but I was able to use a measuring spoon to dose my tank - I felt it was more exact than a pipette. A syringe would work well too!

Toolstation (Ammo Kleen)

the bottle i got was branded 'knock out' by barrettine ....

It is by Barrettine but it's definitely Ammo Kleen: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Clearance/Cleaning+Pest+Control/Household+Ammonia+500ml/d50/sd3211/p96503

Will one of the pipettes that came with Filter Aid etc be OK for dispensing the ammonia? I assume it's tiny amounts.

How do you gauge how much to add?

Mx

Use the calculator already suggested to work out how much ammonia you'll need to dose and then buy a suitable syringe off ebay, they do all sizes.

did you take in to acount that your sand gravel etc means that you wont have exact what the calculate says ie mine said with sump etc i have 372 ltr of water i calculate at around 330 with all plants wood etc. bit of a guessing game lol

yeah I thought OK, 260 litres, well maybe in reality 250 so instead of the recommended 13.whatever ml I did 12ml...as you say a guessing game which I didn't quite get right - just meant a water change or two to get it right! The calculator is a great tool for getting you in the right ballpark..

I put 5ml in my 125 tank (with sand & decor in) and it has come out bang on where I want it i.e. 4ppm or there abouts.

Well, no - where I want it is 0, but you get the idea! Put some cycled media in there today, it will be interesting to see if and how quickly it works.

Thanks for all the advice. I knew this forum would come good.

Syringes and the test kit are winging their way to me and Robert Dyas has provided the ammonia.

I'm good to go.

Got my eye on some beautiful silver-tipped tetras for when fish day dawns.

Just a shame I'm back at school on Monday so won't be able to obsess about levels all day.
