Ammonia

wow, lots of help, thanks everyone
My mother works in a school science laboratory. I will steal ammonia from it and sell it on to you all at £20/ml!
Thats a bit out of my price range clutterydrawer, lol. My dad has a tank and i was going to put a bit of his gravel in some tights and then put that in my filter, thats kinda similar to what you said RYO. I will also look in a different pharmacy for some ammonia without additives.
Cheers! :D

See my post in the beginnner's forum. After much searching I found ammonia in UK in a local store. Not before trying Boots, other pharmacies, ASDA, B&Q etc. The one I found is branded so if you call the company they should be able to tell you your local stockist. It's called Jeyes Kleen Off - Ammonia Household Cleaner and it's 9.5% ammonia diluted with pure water.

hth

Wow thats a great help to actually know the brand name :D Thanks a lot daisycat i will see if i can get my hands on some.
Cheers!

You don't have to ask your biology lecturer. Just ask anyone in the chemistry department. I did, and got about 30mL 2M ammonia for free :D . If there's anyone who understands what you're trying to do with a fishless cycle it's a scientist. :D

For free!?! I dont think they would have sold it to me in boots even if they did have it, lol. They probably thought i was gonna go mixing it with cannabis or whatever some people do...

I've done a bit of looking around for this Jeyes Kleen-Off stuff, and apparantley, it's Caustic Soda. Is this the same as Ammonia?? I don't think so, but I'm no chemist!!!!

Jeyes Kleen Off is a whole range of cleaning products, including caustic soda amongst other things. One of the range is called Ammonia Household Cleaner (as I specified in my earlier post) and this is the correct product.

Some stores stock part of the Kleen Off range and not many (only one I found) stock the Ammonia Household Cleaner part as it requires a particular licence to stock which not all stores want to bother getting.

Contact Jeyes for a supplier list of this particular product - I don't know if they would supply one or not, but they could certainly explain the difference between caustic soda and Ammonia and the fact that their range includes both items!

Hope this clarifies!

You could try your local ASDA store, as they are now owned by Wal Mart. I've always believed that this type of product was unique to our North American cousins though.

i found some yesterday actually, the jeyes Kleen Off stuff, in a hardware store called Jacks. This was in a suburb of leeds and i think it might be a local place rather than a chain with branches elsewhere. but if anyone's desperate enough to trek to leeds for ammonia :D i can get you the shop's phone number

Another option for a fishless cycle is to use a small pinch of fish flakes. They'll decompose and give off nitrogenous wastes. I had great success with this approach in a lightly planted tank. Saw a perfect ammonia and nitrite spike, took about 4 weeks.

Well i wont be needing ammonia anymore cos my dad has decided to let me restore his tank :D It's a 48x15x12 and has been going for a while now with about 7 fish in it. Ideal!
