Ammonia readings

Is it possible to go a week and not have any ammonia readings? I just tested my 1 gal tank and after 3 days I'm showing ammonia in the water. Is a one gallon tank too small to allow me to do a weekly water change? I'm just trying to figure out a schedule to go by for cleanings.

Twice a week 100% water changes should do it for you.

Sometimes I have gone four days without a water change in my 2.5 gallon. I test for ammonia everyday and none showed up for four days. I change my water every 2 or 3 days though.

I thought I would be able to get away with once a week water changes, but I don't want any ammonia showing up. I'll have to do it every couple of days or get a bigger tank.
