Am I the only one who cant help but give advice when in fish stores. Was at a LFS yesterday, over heard a guy and his wife and daughter talking about thier new tank, and i couldnt help myself but give him some pointers, and let him know the ideal way to start a new tank, get a test kit, NOT buy tiger barbs for a brand new community tank. etc. he seemed to really appreiciate it, and even tho he did walk away with three plattys for a brand new uncycled tank, at least it wasnt the rams or tiger barbs, and he knows hes going to be doing lots of water changes to keep them alive.. all new people think that water changes disrupt the "settling" of the tank. i dont think i ever thought that :)

I was in a lfs the other week and a couple were in buying fish for what I presumed was a new tank and the assistant was just giving them all the ones they asked for I stood there shaking my head I doubt she asked what size tank they had or if it had been cycled etc but these were the sort of people that were going to buy fish no matter what and if this store didn't sell them to them they would have moved to the next one.

I was in my LFS and some one had set up a tank, however the tank had very high ammonia, and they guy said leave it 2 weeks and see what happens, they had already left it 2 weeks. He then said if you want do a 50-100% water change and don't worry about using any dechlorinator as there arent any fish in it.

I was thinking about interrupting or catching them before they left, not to change the water and leave the bacteria to grow as changing the water and not adding dechlorinator will kill the bacteria that's combating the ammonia problems.

However I left it as it could have been rude, apart from that one comment about not using chemicals his advice was sound.

I talked a lady out of buying 5 sarasa comets for her 10 gallon heated tank. It wasn't my local shop. The clerk was going to sell them to her and wasn't happy with my interference. My sarasas are 10". All I could picture was what that tank would look like in a few months.

I interrupted a guy trying to buy two red clawed crabs for his guppy tank.

To be fair, the assistant did ask if he had any small or delicate fish, but he was sure 'It'd be fine, my guppies are massive, like, two inches'.

I told him that our red clawed crab had been caught eating a 2in+ platy like it was corn on the cob and he decided he'd 'leave it for now'.

I wish I'd said something at another shop when a guy was buying two green spotted puffers and asking if they would 'go well with cichlids'. Sigh.

I was stood next to a sales person and a couple of guys in a local MA shop last weekend, they wanted some fish but the sales guy said they would fight and could suffer. He said "I can sell you the fish, but i cant give you the standard 7 day guarantee on them because you are going against my advice". I thought that was a pretty good attitude to take really. Customers can be pushy when they want something.
