I have 11 platy fry that were born at the beginning of January. They are now 4 and a half months old. They all seem to be female. Shouldn't I have some males? Or is it still to early to tell?
As far as I've learned... and maybe I don't have a right to comment really seen as I don't know much myself, but fry can all look female right up untill just before they become sexually mature. Males might not seem to develope their gonopodium untill the last minuet, so to speak.
But that's only what I've read, I have no experience myself.
Not enough experience here either (plus I have guppies).... but I have a shocking number of fry turning into females now as they are getting to that stage... in fact... they all seem to have gravid spots except for two... and I'm not sure if that means those are likely to be males or just aren't mature enough yet! LOL
Their far to young to sex, you do get some male's mature early from 12-16 on, but I've seen fish mature as late as 16 months old. This is what gives the idea of sex changing platy/swordtail's but their male, and always were males.
my platy fry were born at the same time and I sexed them at 2/3 months. All the males went to the lfs and I just kept 3 of the nicest females.
All those females are on their second batch of fry now. One gave birth to 13+ (she ate a few) at the weekend.
I have 4 more platy fry (plus the 13 that the 5 month old baby platy had at the weekend) in my fry tank. They are around 6-8 weeks old. I'm getting to the point of sexing them now - they look all female at the moment but I'm going to give it a least another month to be sure.
Blue dragon, everyone has the right to comment. It may be that you can't provide much information but you can always tell people you are new and then tell them what you do know.
