Why do people have several air stones in there tanks with a filter in as well, I mean yes i know the answer it provides oxygen, but why several? what are the ups and downs about these?

Well DERRRRR. But i mean deep down from that, Im talking about why people use them? does it increase stats? Does it increase the growth of plants? yeah bubbles look nice, but is too much oxygen a bad thing for fish?

Their are a million reasons why people use air stones. I have seen this topic go back and fourth many times. I'm sure if you search this question a gazillion threads will come up. :good: Besides bubbles being nice to look at, They do make more surface area on the top of the water allowing for more oxygen exchange.

But i mean deep down from that, Im talking about why people use them? The only 2 reasons I can think of are to increase oxygenation and aesthetics
does it increase stats? only to oxygenate water slightly Does it increase the growth of plants? if anything it inhibits plant growth as the surface agitation drives off the CO2 the plants to grow yeah bubbles look nice, but is too much oxygen a bad thing for fish? not to the extent an airstone could deliver, no

Thanks, thats pretty much what i was looking for :good:
Even if it slows plant growth down, u COULD add plant food anyway? or does that beat the objective?

yeah you could still add plant food. as long as light levels aren't really high then there'd still be enough CO2 in the water for the plant to use. something like easycarbo might also help as its essentially a liquid form of CO2 so replaces the carbon in the water

Airstones can also be used to adjust the PH.

Carbon dioxide lowers PH, oxygen raises the PH. So by adjusting the amount bubbles you can alter/adjust your PH which is what I do.

If I need the PH lowered, I adjust my valves to lower the amount of bubbles. If I need my PH raised I crank up the bubbles.

This is a lot better and more natural than dumping chemicals in your water.

Also, some fish like to swim through the bubbles.
