Just got an air stone and small pump, I like the effect and was wondering do i need to setup a timer on it?

if so how long should I keep it on for?

No u won't need a timer for air stone n the pump coz the fishies will need oxygen all the time.

The only thing that needs timer would b the lightings, or mayb automatic feeding machine if u hav one.

The best airstones for oxygen are the ones that have a fine mist and the larger bubbles airstones are best for moving the water around.

Airstones don't actually add oxygen to the water. It's the surface aggitation of the water that adds the oxygen - the more aggitation, the more oxygen, so smb is right, larger bubbles make more aggitation, therefore more oxygen.

do you have to add an airstone? or will fish be ok without one - i just set up my tank and i dont have one?? im a bit worried now

No, you don't have to have one. Just make sure that the filter outlet is higher than the water so that it cascades a makes ripples.

If your looking to find bigger bubbles, just take some knee hose and slip it over the bottom of a flower pot, than stick your stonejunder the pot andturn the pot up-side-down with the stone in it. You should see some big gurgles.
