My stupid snail (big snail named Monstro 2 inches across), who enjoyed rearanging my decor in my tank, moved my plastic log into a position that he got himself traped. Thus my huge snail expired in the corner of my tank gasping for breath :-( Found him this morning with his little breather tube extended out from under the log.. *crys*

As a side note.. i was wondering how to break this to Jake (monstros owner age 4) But all he is doing is runnin around the house chanting "Monstro died Monstro died" This from the kid that cried when his plant died

I never knew snails could drown. When mine sometimes climb to the top and stick their little mouth thing out of the water, is that breathing?

What you should do is tell you 4yr old that the snail was homesick and ran away back home. Then take your 4 yr old back to the store and allow him to chose another snail or fish.

true apple snails have both gill apparatus for breathing underwater and a lung for breathing out of the water. when u purchse snails at lfs you should have them bagged WITHOUT water as being jostled around in water could cause them to actually drown. Most lfs do not know this. Again I am referring to apple snails.
