So im getting a 55 gal saltwater tank and thought it would be very cool to replicate the fish from the dentist tank in the movie find nemo.

Would these fish:
Clown fish
Moorish Idol
Porcupinefish (puffer)
Royal Gramma
Starfish
Damselfish
Yellow tang
Pacific cleaner shrimp

be able to fit in the 55 gal and could swim in peace. Also what type of envoirnment would best suit them?

I'd like to re create the the aliens in my locker like in MiB 2, but hey that was a movie and Nemo was a cartoon - Ie Not real.

I'm no marine expert, but no not in a 55 gallon tank.

Have a look on the marine section on here and they'll give you better stocking advice than I can.

No to the porcupine puffer (that can get like half a meter 30-40cm long!).

No to the Yellow Tang (a young one short term might be ok but they get pretty big and VERY active)

No to the Moorish Idol. They are so difficult to keep alive in captivity that even most sealife aquariums cant/wont try it. They cant be fed their natural diet, they are fussy, they get WAY too big....

And so on....

The pair of clowns, royal gramma, damsel, starfish (a fromia starfish of some kind) and the cleaner shrimp would all be ok.

But to be completely honest, if a customer tells me they want to set up a marine tank like the one in finding nemo... i usually run away screaming... that tank was awful! And its a stupid kids film! Its not an accurate description of anything!

A LOT more research and thought needs to go into it.

Soooo like... :good:

And none of you could say, ah yeah it was a really cool movie, but those fish won't all get along, grow too big, are too fussy etc. etc.

It was a simple question really, and a nice idea (if the contents were compatible).

Sheesh!

Dude, that is what they said.

I hate that movie  with a passion. It makes me want to quit my job most days!

I did say which species would and wuldnt be compatible and a brief description of why :p

Ya im not going to do that, I had a feeling wouldn't work out. I will probably slowly pick out easy begginer salt water fish, that look good!

It is in what they said, but tis all about how advice is presented.

Really? it gave the aquatic pet trade a massive boost in income for at least 3 years....

I know its factually incorrect, but the imagery is very good, including how the fish 'feel' when the glass is tapped, they are shaken, scared etc. and about good tank maintainance....

I worked in a pet store as a youngster, and appreciate how fads affect purchases, but its a great film.

Yep...whole reefs were wiped out and thousands of Clown fish put through unecessary suffering so that a generation of 10 year olds could have a pet Nemo.

Excellent imagery though, I agree.

No more reefs were wiped than normal, and almost all the clown fish sold in Europe are from bred stock (its cheaper than catch).

I know there was a load of media hysteria at the time claiming this kind of thing.

thatt is too small for some, and not all will get on
(if you need help choosing others come to the salty section)

You realize that the movie isn't about fish, right?

:good:

I think clowns would be selling just as well had there not being a film, people only have to take one look and fall in love!

I think some other good fish that are suitable for a 55g tank and are friendly/easy to keep are:

Coral Beauty
Eibl Angel, Flame Back Angel, Fireball Angel (all lovely but *can* potentially be coral nippers)
Bangaii Cardinal
Algae Blenny
Midas Blenny
Tail Spot Blenny
Coral Goby
Tobacco Bass
Chalk Bass
Dottyback (can be really nasty and tbh as cute as they are, i dont like them)
Alleni Damsel
