Ok so my cycle has started with around 5ppm of ammonia yesterday dropping to 0.5 this morning and a nitrite level of 5ppm today, only thing is I won't be here to add ammonia daily as I'm away in college Monday to Friday, I added some more ammonia to bring it back up so will I be ok til next Friday? Or will the bacteria die off?

Well you can get special tablets that dissolve slowly letting a certain amount in the water every day. You can purchase these from a local fish shop. You can do the same with other things like medication and food. Anyway I think that is your best option but if you can't find any you will have to get someone from your family or a friend to come in and do it everyday while your at college.

Hope this helps

Yes, you could add a pinch or two of fish food that would rot down (it takes about three days to start producing ammonia) to keep things ticking over.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but how are you going to feed your fish, when you get them, if you're away at college all week? The automatic fish feeders aren't terribly reliable :/

I'm actually broke now til I'm paid next week so I can't get fish food or this tablets unfortunately, looks like ill have to get my Ma to add some ammonia each day, would it matter if it wasn't tested til I get back?, and I'm only in college til the start of December

It wouldn't matter too much if you weren't there to test. I wouldn't get your mum to add some every day though, you might end up wit too much in there.

Measure out the right amount, and just get her to drop it in a couple of times; perhaps Tuesday and Thursday, if she doesn't mind. That should be enough to feed the bacteria while you're not there :)

Great, thanks for the advice :)
