Well I m stuck. Being new to fish I fell into the trap of believing the fish shops when I asked them for advice on all aspects of fish keeping. (since finding this forum today I realise this is common) I chatted with about 3 different fish shops and got similar advice so I went out and got my tank was told to set it up with the filter for 2 weeks then I could get my fish. I asked if the newt and fish would be ok together was told yes fine as long as its a large fish so I believed them

2 years on I have been told I shouldn’t have my large goldfish in with my Spanish spotted newt they have lived together for over a year and a half now with no problems. I have goggled Spanish spotted newt and came up with nothing just the Spanish ribbed newt so I am now wondering if he is even is a Spanish spotted.

What do I do, is it likely that they will continue to be ok as they have for so long now? The fish is larger than the newt. I don’t really want to get rid of either but I don’t have any room for 2 large tanks one for each of them, but I also don’t want either to come to any harm.

Anyone? I am starting to worry about them now. I was planning on getting a bigger tank for them also

Is this your newt? http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Pleurodeles/P_waltl.shtml

Since they are both coldwater and have been together this long I don't see why they shouldn't stay in the same tank, but You will be needing a very large tank for the pair.

Common goldfish grow to well over 12 inches long and fancies to about the size of a large orange/medium grapefruit ( the closest approximate example of size I can think of , I have seen such fish in real life, very chunky)

Acccording to that site this type of newt also grows to around 12 inches long, and there is a picture of someone holding one so you can see how big and hefty they can grow!

I'd say a tank of at least 55 gallons, but preferably bigger to give them both space to move around.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is if your newt is male. If he gets rather erm..frisky there is a chance he could try and latch onto the goldfish in the throes of passion and injure him/her.

You may want to enquire in the reptiles and amphibian section on here, provide a picture to help identify your newt and ask them for advice too.

Hi, thanks for the help. Yep that looks like the newt we have and the fist is an oranda. Whats the tank size in Ltr? Sorry no good with gallons.

Also it mentions in the details with the pic that they reach 6-8 in in captivity

About 250 litres. Anything over 200 is good to go for your fish and newt. If they get on well enough and you have no issues feeding them both their preferred foods then I really see no problem with them being together. Goldfish, even fancies are basically a type of carp, and wild carp and newts live in the same waters in the wild anyway as both prefer slower currents/ponds and lakes.
