Well right now it looks like I'm right in the path of hurricane Katrina and I might have to evacuate. I was just wondering if theres anything I can do help my fish survive this this thing, because I'm sure the power will go out for a while.

I have a 30 gallon tank with 5 black skirt tetras, 3 emarald cories, 2 otos, and 2 gold gouramis. I was going to feed them today and do a water change before we leave town, and maybe put a weekend feeder tablet in it.

Is there any other precautions I can take? What if the power is out whenever we get back, what am I supposed to do then?

I wouldn't put a weekend feeder table in as it may just pollute the tank especially if the filter is off due to a power cut. Definately do a water change. Is there any way you can insulate the tank? Maybe with some warm blankets etc so it won't cool down as quickly?

I think in Louisianna , its not cooling off fast that will be the problem, but the fish being without filteration for a long time... I'm not sure what I would do in this situation :/

I agree though that adding a feeding tablet will probably be a bad idea. Poisonous water is much more harmful than being hungry.

Best of luck and I wish you all a safe return home!

Yeah I guess a weekend feeder would be a bad idea, they should be okay to about 3 days without food right?

Cooling down is definitely not a problem, it actually may get up to 84, 85 degrees, that will not not be high will it?

I wouldn't worry about the temperature. They should be fine between 84-85. I wouldn't even feed them today. You want to minimize the waste to minimize the ammonia in the tank. Before you leave, you may want to consider putting your spoune into your tank to try to give the bacteria a source of food. If you have a neighbor who is staying and riding out the storm, ask them to stir up the tank atleast once a day to help with the oxygen in the tank.

Well good luck with the storm. She seems like she's gonna be a doozie...I wish you well and hope you and yours (and your fish) come out of it okay.

I wouldn't feed them, adult fish can go for quite a while without eating, they do it in the wild.

I would wrap a blanket or some other protective padding around the tank just in case you do get hit bad, flying debris will smash a tank very easily.

If they power is out when you get back, put your filter media in the tank to keep it wet, swishing occasionally to get fresh water to it. It may be a good idea to give them a light cleaning before you do this, the less debris in the tank the better.

Good luck, get back to us on how you did!

Good Luck from Ft. Lauderdale. We had Katrina on Thursday night, but it was only a Category 1 when she came through. We were fortunate and didn't lose power, but I was concerned for our tank as well. Large areas are still without power and a couple tank owners I know are using Generators for their filter systems.

We are watching the news here and she is much stronger, so be careful.

Yeah, its getting pretty nasty around here. The storm hasnt quite gotten to where I am yet and probably wont be as bad as it is in Mississippi and Lousiana. Its done a lot of damage in Mississippi and New Orleans from what Ive heard. They are saying we might get power outages too, and that has me a little scared. I hope everyone made it thru this storm safely. It seems like there is a hurricane around here every month

I read your first email just as Katrina was gearing up. Now as I'm watching the footage from New Orleans on tv.... words can't even begin to express. I just hope that you and all your friends and family are okay.

Speaking for the people in the Pacific Northwest... our thoughts, prayers and all the help we can send are finally on the way.

I agree 100 percent with you, i watched all the people that stayed behind and its jsut really sad. i jsut hope that your hosue wasnt torn down and that everyoen you know is safe! best of luck! :(

Are you ok buddy? I hope u and ur fish is alright as I saw on the news it was horrible after the storm pass.

Put them in bags(from your lfs) put them in a cooler, and take them with you
Good luck for the storm

I expect the fish are the last of his/her worries now. From what I have seen, people are finding it hard to survive...
