Adopting Two 6Yr Old Pugs

Hi everyone,
Quick update. Ive been visiting them every day and have totally fallen head over heels. But yesterday the shelter called me-they had managed to track down the owners that the dogs were microchipped to. They said the dogs were 9 &10, so much older than thought. They had them for their whole lives, until 3 months ago when they had to move so they gave them to a gypsy family
It seems the gypo's had them living in their own filth and totally neglegted them, hence the dogs toiletting in their own beds. Thank god it was only a few months, though it was through the coldest winter :-(

So anyway, Im now determined that I can get them housetrained easily, as its a case of re-learning old tricks, and they are going to have nice beds next to my fire to retire to. I love them so much already.

The girl still has nasty kennel cough though, so I cant see her for another week. We arent sure whether she is going to be spayed now either. Ive asked the shelter to leave her, as she wont get preg aged 10, and it would cause the old girl so much trauma which isnt needed, but its their policy so we will see.

Hopefully no more than 2 weeks till I can have them home! We also found out that her original name is Wilma, so I want to change it to make her 'my own', but want to keep it similar sounding so she isnt confused. Any ideas?!

Im keeping Wallace's name as I love it

Oh my goodness - how an earth can people be so awful, I can't imagine having a dog for any length of time let along that long and giving it away to a life like that, the poor babies, thank goodness you are willing to give them the old age they deserve :good:

I'm really looking forward to seeing that photo of them snuggled up in front of the fire - that will be a special moment indeed :good:

You will confuse her if you change her name, shes had it her whole life, but it might work if you change it to something with the same intonation and something that rhymes(although not much rhymes with wilma). So something that sounds the same, so preferably 2 syllables with a rising intonation on the first and a falling intonation on the second and ending with an A sound. So like Cilla or Sasha might work, but Jessica or Mandy would be less likely to.

At the end of the day you have to toilet train these dogs so the name she responds best to is best, so try them out with her.

Just a heads up my friends dog (Zebbedy) will answer to Zebbedy but will only obey commands if called my his orginal name Jack, and he was only 2 when they got him.

Oh and dont get too caught up on names as you WILL, not matter how much you try not to, eventually call them nicknames most of the time. For instance, my dogs name on his kennel club certificate is Kenyee White Jewel, we call him Mak because thats what he was called before we got him, his nicknames are as follows:
Makky, Mukka, Muckypup, Puppy, Makkyboo, Baby, Snook, Snuckum, Boy, Babe, Sweetie, Honeybuns,Fatbum, etc
but if I want his attention for commands or disciplining I have to say Mak, Muk or Makky. So similar sounds.

Hope that helps :)

Well we have decided to stick with Wilma for those reasons! I dont like it, but shes gunna be mumma pup for most of the time
I get to pick them up on Weds, Im so excited! I won the battle to keep her un-spayed (or whatever the term is!) so thats one worry gone.
Watch this space for piccys of my new babies....

Ahhh I get to collect them tomorrow afternoon as soon as I finish work! Im so excited, guess who isnt going to sleep tonight  Piccys to follow....

They're looking good..... I was offline for a couple of days (moving house) so didn't notice when you placed the photos.... They're gonna be as happy with their new home as you're gonna be having them.... The start of a lasting relationship!
