Accidental spawning!

JODY!! wou!! Look at your babies!!! they are very nice shape! Congratulation to you! Aren't they are so cute? I really like to see how they look like when they were 2 and 3 months old especially the tail. :) You should get crownmoon tail.

 thanks Bettaman

but you have to take credit for the worms which have made them grow big and strong :flex:

Thanks Yeevie :)

I'm not quite sure what I'll get as these are pet store bettas so who knows :dunno: but will be exciting over the next few weeks to find out

so another week has gone by and the guys are growing nicely. I moved 16 into the growout tank a couple of days ago but kept 4 small ones back so they can play catch-up and also the belly slider one :/ They are in their spawn tank with some week old platy fry and getting on great as they platy are teaching them to eat non-live food.

So that means I miscounted and I have 21 fry! :)

The others are sharing their tank with 3 cories who spawned for the first time yesterday so a nice protein rich feast was had by all :D Unfortunately one of the babies seems to have tried to bite off more than it can chew and seems to have dislocated its jaw. It can eat, I've seen food go in, even frozen artemia, so I'm pretty sure its not blocked and also it can still chew. Looks quite wierd though like a constant yawn and I'm sure it can't be comfortable. Has this happened to anyone before? will it sort itself out?

The agression seems to have died down now they have more space so I don't need to separate anybody just yet but I'm still keeping an eye on them.

I have around 4 that don't show any red at all on them and just have the feint blue/lilac hue to them so will be interesting to see what colour we get. It appears that most if not all of the fry are showing crowntail tendancies which is fab! I did have one little DT fry but it was one of the really small ones that died early on :-(

Here is a pic of the poor fry that can't close its mouth :(

Joby - looking good! However, the mouth? Sounds like a dislocated jaw. :/ Not much you can do for that as far as I know, and it probably won't resolve itself. I've had to cull a few I've had that happen to - one from each of my first three spawns, so far. one died on it's own while choking, the others were quite distressed. Maybe someone else has better advice, and knows a secret trick. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Cation :)

I might have to cull it :-( does that mean what I think it does

Will it not thrive with its mouth like that? stupid question I guess. I'm going to give it a few days to see if it can get it unlocked again. Its still got a nice round belly like its siblings as it can still eat at least

I've never heard of one relocating their jaw, but I have heard of them growing up to a healthy adulthood - they just always have the open mouth. If you want to take care of it, it may live a relatively normal life, but it'll probably always have its mouth open. If it doesn't bother you or the fish, by all means don't cull it! (yes, that means what you think it means... :-( )

Thanks Cation :)

I might post this over on emergencies and see if anyone else has any experience of a dislocated jaw

Its still very much eating and healthy and able to chew but I'm kind of worried about the choking possibility :-(

Its typical but its one of the ones that hasn't got any red on and looking a very nice blue/lilac coming in on the body and fins :/

Colours are really starting to show now and they are growing like crazy!

I still have the guy with the disclocated jaw and the belly slider in a separate tank with some platy fry and they are both doing well. I do now however have a guy in the growout tank that started to look a little fragile for a day and then the next morning his spine started to kink. Its now like an S shape but its still swimming and eating. I'd contained it in a breeding trap in case the others picked on it but will transfer it to the tank with the other oddities later. Now question is do I cull these 3 guys because they aren't perfect or will it be ok to keep them as they are obviously eating and growing?

A few bouts of flaring and a little nipping but no fins destroyed so hopefully we can hold off the jarring for a few more days

Here are a few pics of the fry with the bent one first :/

Its really difficult to get good pics of my guys, but I took loads tonight and managed to get at least 2 I was pleased with. This guy is in a breeding trap in the main fry tank and flares at anything that moves, and anything that doesn't!

Edit: ok posted the wrong picture :*) this guy is in a divided and although its blurred you can see his lovely colouring
