Don't pee in your tank!

Don't laugh, some people are saying this is a good way to provide ammonia for a fishless cycle.

Human pee isn't the same as what's produced by fish. Urea is whats produced by humans and it is a modified from ammonia (NH3) to contain 2 nitrogenous groups, and is basically non toxic. Also, its somewhat more concentrated than ammonia from fish, as they need to release large quantitites of water to maintain osmotic balance.

This has been a public service announcement by the society of fishkeepers against peeing in tanks

Yeah i've heard about that trend but i think its totally gross; would you want to put your hand in your tank to say, re-arrange decor, just after you have pissed in it?

I've heard of it, that's how they cycled there tanks, before products hit the market.

I agree. It's a very old method of getting "ammonia" into a tank. I never meant to imply this was a new trend.

I'm just pointing out that it's probably not as effective as adding pure ammonia since the ammonia is in a bonded form in human pee.

And the yuck factor.

The Skeptical Aquarist talks about adding urine to his own tank in the interest of fostering biodiversity. On the biodiversity side of the argument, growing as many diverse species of bacteria so that no one species gets an upper hand is a great idea. But, that yuk factor is still a pretty good argument.

How is it any worse than putting your hand into water that yourt fish have peed and pooped in?

Human urine, well, any urine, is one of the cleanest byproducts the body produces. It is in fact sterile!!!
