As I was transferring one of my bettas from his bowl into a cup a small section of his tail fell off! What should I do about this? I didn't use a net or anything to transfer him... just my hand like I normally do. I am so worried he its going to get infected.

He is in a one gallon bowl.

He was completely normal before, he was flaring at the other bettas and everything.. that's why it took me by surprise. It hadn't really frayed or anything.. a piece of it just broke off from the 'body' or whatever you wanna call it.

I read somewhere that this can sometimes happen from over activity.. is this true?

I'll pick up some aquarium salt tomorrow.. anything else?

Yes, they can bust fins from over-flaring. Although I think what's more likely happened is that you have accidently torn off a peice of his tail. With clean, warm water it shouldn't become infected.

Do you have a picture? Is he still active and eating?

No sorry.. I don't have a picture. But he is still happily swimming around and eating.

keeping the water clean as well as using a little aquarium salt and melafix (note - use less than recomended) will help his tail re-grow. Keep an eye out for signs of infection such as fuzz, or the edges turning red or black

I had to order Melafix since the pet store didn't have any. :(

How much salt should I use per gallon?

Thanks guys.. I appreciate it.
