hello,

ive got a prob with parasites, need an advise and lil help. i have 200l tank with tropical fish for maby more then 6 month after recycle. everything seems to be not bad in all this time, but 1 month ago i notice that my guppy have smth sticking out of her anus. tryed to look more carefully but it was hard to keep fish still. after it seems disapear so i thought maby was a poop. after 1 week i notice that again something sticking out, so i fed the fish and was trying to have a good look at it. there was 3 spikes hanging out of it. start to do reasearch in web and the best description was CALLAMANUS WORMS!!!! went to aqaua shop bought some medicine as shop keeper said it might help, but it didnt. i seperate the fish. after a week another fish start to have symptoms...start to look for solution. none of the pet shops got any medicine from it as its none common desiese, but seems lots of ppl deal with that problem. so everyone saying thats its good to use Fenbendazole (Panacur). the only medicine with it i found in my area is Panacur Worming Granules for Cats, Kittens, Dogs and Puppies 3 x 4.5gm...as guppy passed away today it seems another 2 fishes got symptoms too, so i want to treat as soon as posible and i think i need to trat all tank. so anyone can help me to work out how should i dose these granules in water? probably need buy live food like bloodworms and soak them in this mixture. and are these worms gonna die? and how often should i give this and for how long? as there is diferent opinions on it. please help.

I have used the Panacur granules you are talking about on my koi for calmanus worms and the dose my vet said was 2 granules dissolved in ten drops of water with a pinch of live or freeze dried blood worms. Soak for ten minutes for freeze dried or twenty for live and feed them SLOWLY to fish not letting any one fish eat more than three or four worms. It sounds impossible and it is hard, but it can be done. DO NOT let the Panacur liquid drop into the tank. Give the worms a little shake before you drop them in. One treatment should do it if you can get everybody to eat at least one Panacur treated blood worm.

Oh and after you treat, exactly 4 hours later, you need to do a big 75% water change to remove the residual Panacur from the water as well as any calamnus eggs or dead worms. It was a chore for me to siphon and debris vac my pond, let me tell you! My vet is the best and is always there when I need him, even for my fish. :good:

What % is the active ingredient?

The dose is apparently 1.14 grams per pound of food fed for three days, with a repeat treatment in two to three weeks; hope you've got your maths head on...

That is the correct dose for mammals fluttermoth, but with fish it will build in their system and kill them if fed for 3 days as fish use their livers to balance their swim bladders and Panacur is eliminated thru the liver.. One large dose, with a short period of fasting afterward is the recommended treatment course for fish, at least in my neck of the woods. As stated by my vet, anyways! My koi were pooping dead worms  for four or five days and then started to really put weight and vigor back on.

Apologies, nanoMama! Your posts weren't showing up when I wrote mine!

Your (and your vets) advice is obviously much better and more accurate than what my 'net trawling uncovered

Some of these more obscure things require a call to the vet. There is sooo much more to this hobby than people realize! At least you responded flutermoth :good: , with an attempt to help. I see so many things just ignored. I get tired of answering the same questions over and over, but I know my feelings get hurt when nobody answers mine. Like I am starting a salty journey, and My thread is pretty much being ignored. It does hurt, even though I know the people on here have been buds forever and I am a newcomer.

thanks for answer i really glad that at least some ppl react to my help call. as i call 3 local vets they are not specified in fishes so they know nothing. 1 of them even surprise me by his stupidnes, as he said he dont really know and i ask so what should i do he said try to take worms out of the fish!!! how stupid is that? i can hurt fish like that or kill. try to find any medicines but in 2 pet shops they didint sold me as i try to buy panacure dewormer for dogs and cats and i told its for my fish. so in 3ed one i found panacure 10% liquid so had to lie that i have a dog to get that. so i gues i need help with dosage again. i try to work out by my self but it seems nothing happening(2 drops of panacure on 5 ml food, mostly flakes as not all fishes eats pellets or tropical food balls), on tuesday gonna try get live food maby it will help more. its gonna be hard to feed every fish seperately coz my tetras are flaming fast, and mollys grab bigger pieces. so if u have some time can u answer and help me with these worms. i would be really glad if someone help me, as i am newbie in all these stuff. scared that from wishing best can kill all my fishes by acsident.

p.s. if ppl all the time dealing with camallanus worm why they not producing any meds to cure? especialy in uk its so hard to buy anything.

In your case, I am afraid you are going to have to net everyone. Everybody is going to have to have their own small container so you can make sure no fish is over treated. If everybody eats flake fish food, take a small mirror and drop five SMALL drops on it. Use an old credit card or something to spread it in as thin a layer as you can on the glass and then sprinkle enough flake food on it so it is not damp any more. Wait just long enough to make sure it is completely dry, then scrape it off into a small cup. Small fish should get the smaller flakes, bigger fish the bigger flakes. Everyone should get approximately 2 flakes. The fish that have obvious worms emerging from their anus should get three. Then net everyone and return them to the tank. It is extremely important to note to NOT POUR THE WATER FROM THE SMALL CONTAINERS BACK IN THE BIG TANK! Doing so will overdose the fish on panacur. All the flakes from your mixing will not be consumed. You can save them so if you need to treat again you will have them as long as you put them in a zip-loc baggie or the like.

i will do a little break for a week, as platty got stress and baloon molly start to be bulied and stressed. and today my water went green, done water change of about 60-70% dont want to make them ill with bladder dis or itch or smth else. done water test too to make sure its ok. amonia 0, nitrites about 0.1, nitrates 5, ph about 7.5, probably got bacteria boost from panacure. so ive got 2 cloan loaches, 6 black phantom tetras, 6 scisor tetras, 3 blood tetras, 3 baloon mollys, 2 plattys, 1 sucer fish(dont remember how its called, but def not plac), 6 other tetras(orange with black, forgot name too) and 2 gouramis. so its 31 in total...should i net them all separately like 1 in 1 container? coz its gonna be really hard to do that. was thinking to net faster fishes separately from slower as tetras seems dont bother about anything, and 1 f. molly and gouramis seems to be slower phantoms seems to be stunned when i try to feed with tweezers. and if i separate gouramis or mollys they will be a bit stressed and not eat. so was thinking to net tetras out to a container and feed them there, and the rest feed in tank. then put them all back in tank and wait...then if success and they poop worms away, do 85% water change with good gravel vacum. just need to work out with dosage, as yesterday i fed them with bloodworms soaked in panacure 3 more fishes seems had hanging "friends"from there butts, but after 1 h it disappeared back, and i was sitting near tank for 6h waiting and checking they didnt poop worms, just normally brownish green, some had white, and platty and gourami had stringy whitish with some greenish stuff. maby after if they poop worms out i should clean gravel with water in shower or doesnt really needed as it will kill good bacteria and can make cycle ruined, and stress even more fish and then i have to plant all the tank all over again, as i just redecorated all tank with more hiding places and plants? i am sooo confused. i try my best to do everything right but it seems everything going wrong. and i dont really understand where did these worms came from? as they all live in a tank from 7-4 month(4 month is the last time i bought fishes) and incubation for these worms is a month. can it be that i bought them with a plants?

thanks...any advise would be great

You put the panacure in the water :shout: ? You need to do an IMMEDIATE now as soon as you read this! 75% water change! I told you if you were going to feed them the blood worms treated with panacure, you neeeded to do a water change exactly 4 hours after you fed them :grr:  ! Water change now :shout: ! Test again, and tell me what your results are.

i didnt add panacure to water . i add worms wich i soaked in panacure. i shake them well, well i done water change all green gone away. all fishes alive. all tests seems to be normal. today made panacure flake mixture, at first though its not gonna be good idea as flakes became mashed. but it seems when its geting dryer its becoming harder, like a big piece of flake. on weekend gonna try it. oh yea when was changing water was looking for any died or pooped worms...no sign of them. i am starting to give up. i feel defeated. stupid worms. isnt that a discrimination that fishes cant have proper treatment like other pets?
