For Petsmart! Today I went to look at fishies... and as I was walking along the wall, turned around to look at shelves and found myself across from reptiles/amphibians. I saw some betta cups full of what looked like soil, and immediately was curious. I was thinking perhaps it was live food of some sort, so checked it out. What did I find? FROGS. :grr:  I was very upset when I realized they were round frogs almost as big around as the cup was. There were three of them - labeled as Pac Man frogs, for $5. Of course I really wanted to save one and bring it home (plus they were SUPER SUPER cute), but I grabbed a book off the shelf, looked them up, and found out that they grow to a good 10-14 cm and need a 10 gallon aquarium... not to mention needing crickets and mice for their meals! I'm glad I didn't get one... but I'm awfully upset that they are using betta cups for a new and almost sicker use. I wish I had an empty 10 for one... a rescue of sorts.. but then again, that would probably encourage them to continue selling these. I think I will talk to the manager next time I'm in there... I didn't have time today. And if anyone else sees this, please talk to someone!

Also- just a note to mods, I realize this could easily go in the Reps/Amphibs forum, but I really don't think it'll get many views, plus... I think it's sorta fishy related. Thanks. :p

 those get to be some big frogs if they eat mice!!, imagine sticking your finger in there to grab something and it grabs your finger  , i wonder how they manage to keep them in those things when they can easily jump and probably knock them over, unless they had them in someplace they couldnt do that, but yeah how hard would it be for them to set up a display tank for them unless they are vicious towards each other but i couldnt see that, although i've had a frog hiss at me once :/

Actually they will eat each other, I have read quite a bit about them since I came home and it says they are cannabalistic. Also, in the book it listed one of their indentifying characteristics as a willingness to bite!! :S Not the nicest frogs I don't think...

gotta love those evil cannabalistc amphibians

Pacman frogs have recently come into popularity because of their size and their unusually large appetite.  If you are looking for an active or cuddly pet, these frogs are definitely not for you.  As with all frogs, they are not the type of pet that you should handle frequently.  Their skin is very sensitive and any handling could damage its skin which is used like a sponge to soak up oxygen and water.  They are easy to care for and are relatively inexpensive to care for.  Their lifespan is about six years of age.  Their most endearing quality to their owners is their big grin which is as wide as they are!

i want one

General appearance: Pac man frogs are arge, fat frogs, seem to consist of two parts, a stomach and a mouth and appear to be designed solely to eat. They are often very colorful, usually green with dark red to black markings along their back, females slightly larger than males. Usually round in shape, with a mouth disportionately larger than the body appearing to look like Pac Man characters, this is one of the few frogs that do have teeth. Males grow to about 7 inches, females 9 inches.

i really want one

i had one a long time ago. i had soil in the tank and never saw that fron once. it always buried itself :) they are not to be handled and they do bite and bite hard.

I liked my White's tree frog. Even if it did try to eat my finger... silly froggy, fingers are for kids...

Man I hate It when pet stores do stuff like that.
