I just tested my water and the no3 readigs where at 50 ppm and the no2 was at 0 is that good or bad?

I have set up the tank on sunday and its a 7 gallon tank . I am unable to do a fishless cycle because there is no ammonia on my area

sorry the no3 was at 25 ppm

you can do a fishless cycle using fish food rather than ammonia
thats how i cycled all my tanks. worked perfectly.

I live in York england so i cant think of someware that woud have ammonia

Homebase sell it if thats any help. Just household ammonia its around a couple of £.s.

In your profile it says you have a 7 gallon fish are fun hex what are you planning to put in there because I have one and dont know what to put in?? Oh and thanks i might give that a try

the fish r fun is a 5 gallon, and is occupied by a betta (just noticed my profile wasn't updated, it's all updated now!). the betta in my avatar in fact (evil beastie Damien).

i have 1 5 gallon, 2 7 gallons and one 7.5 gallon. all occupied by bettas and all in my bedroom, the buzzing of filters is enough to drive anyone bonkers!

also, if you're worried about having chemicals around the house, do the cycle with fish food, i set the tank up, gravel, filter going, etc, and put a large pinch of pellet food in. and keep adding every now and then (i'm really not very structured when i cycle!) and keep checking ammonia and nitrate/ite levels, it'll take between 2-4 weeks to cycle, but it works! make sure you syphon the gravel when it's done though, lots of mouldy food hehe!

I had to stop the filter buzzing in that one. Its was driving me wild do you still need to do a cycle on a small tank?

if the tank has a filter, it needs to be cycled.
anything under 5 gallons can go unfiltered, with large water changes twice a week, but with doing that, the only fish you can keep in it is a betta, i do this with my 4 gallon tank, i also keep it bare-bottomed, a lot easier to keep clean!

oh i have black gravle in mine at the moment. I think i might just keep a betta in there and then get a bigger tank for all the other fish. Does cycling cause more algie to grow? Or was I wrong

you'll get algae in your tank in any case. everyone gets algae. when a tank is young (under a year) you'll definately get brown algae, its common and yucky stuff, but wipes off surfaces. there's no avoiding it!

I thaught so right i have to get some ammonia and a magnet cleaner now...
