A Fish I Was Not Expecting

Yeay, it looks like it will be a male guppy, no gravid spot visible but the poop is a concern. The feces look trailing and white. What has it been eating? Maybe feed a bit of peas for constipation, hopefully it doesn't have internal parasites.

Gilli, how come you couldn't keep it?

They are ok when small but they get very aggressive when they grow. They also attatch themselves to the sides of any fish they can catch and suck off their body slime. The body slime protects your fish against disease and without this protective coating they are weakened. Not a good fish to have at all!

Even as an adult I've heard guppies can become food for angel fish so be careful!

Here's a newer pic, I think female guppy?

I've put her into the tank with no males to harass her and no angels which may eat her.

If I wanted to have more guppies, would it be OK to put a male in that tank as well, and if so how long for and how long should I wait until doing it? Am guessing the fry is 2 weeks old so too young now?

Thanks,

Mark

She is still very young. You would need to wait a few months until she's grown.

Then place your favourite male with her for a week(even less would do) and then remove him. She should give birth in 3-4 weeks max from placing a male with her and she will be giving birth every month from then on for another 3-4 months without any more mails. You don't need another female if you are only going to be housing her temporarily with a male. She should be fine as long as the tank has some decorations.

Thank you, that is very helpful. The new tank she is in has lots of plants, and gourami not big enough to eat her! Presumably when she has given birth I will need to separate out the male and female fry - how long could I leave them together before I need to separate them to avoid a huge number of guppies!?

Thanks again,

M

Well, it depends on the growth rate but the fry won't be able to breed until the males develop their gonopodium. This can happen when they are 4-8 weeks old or even older. It depends. Watch out for the pointed gonopodium/fin around the anal area.
Females however, are way easier to sex when very young. When max two weeks old they have a tiny gravid spot. I can see it without a magnifying glass :yahoo:

Even if you leave them together for a while, they won't breed until the males have developed a gonopodium but you can separate them way earlier than that by sexing the females instead. I've had males with gonopodiums as early as 3-4 weeks old and as late as 3 months old maybe. So it depends.

And regardless of that, even if fertilized when very young by some fast growing male, the females won't get pregnant until they are 2-3 months old themselves but may carry the sperm until they are grown enough to reproduce. The amount of fry they give birth to the first time could be rather small too.

Personally I would wait for the fish to look like a proper grown adult before I start breeding it as it may interfere with their growth and health.

Thank you, that is really helpful. Am going to wait a couple of months before breeding her,

Thanks for the advice, she is now looking fully grown and has a single male with her as well. Will update if fry do turn up!
