A Few Questions

i am wondering if it is possible to keep a few clownfish in a standard 2ft??

i am not going to have live rock or anything like that.i know a lot about african cichlids which water conditions arent really much different to marines.

what filters,heaters etc will i need?


any help or advice is welcome

Clownfish are territorial and unless you manage to find a pair it's very unlikely this would work, especially as the tank is too small for more than one really.

Live rock is essential really.

The same heater as you'd have in a FW tank, forget about filters, live rock and powerheads are what you need.

Liverock is your filter. You cannot do without it these days as its simply the best filter money can buy. You also have to put something in the tank for the cownfish to use as a territory so you might as well use Liverock and make it do the work as a filter as well as aquascaping.

ok well for one my LFS doesnt have any live rock in the tank that he keeps about 5 clownfish in a small jebo tank.

are you sure that its not possible??

LFS's do alot of things. Just to sell stock, keep sutomers, lack of room, whatever the reason, they dont always keep their livestock in appropriate condition.

Alot of things are possible in marine tanks, but whether your fish will do well or survive is another thing. You should always give your fish the best possible tank. IMO, it is not possible to keep that many fish in a small jebo without proper filtration. Besides the waste factor, 5 clowns, once fully grown, are large, and can be very aggresive. Im sure some would fight.

Just because "someone else does" doesnt mean you should, or its right for the animals in question.

If your thinkin bout using that 2ft tank for clowns, just a single specimen will do well. They are just as entertaining.

i got told that if you bought live rock well then you have to get a skimmer etc??

You dont need a skimmer always. When you set up your tank, you put the rock in first. It has some die off, and that cycles your tank. When your tanks cycled, then you can stat thiking about livestock. IMO, you only really need a skimmer when you have a high bioload. Not something you'll have in a nano with one clown.

As for equipment, a simple small heater, a powerhead for good circulation, and which provides plenty of surface agitation, and youve got a really basic system.

I suggest you read some members tank journals, which can be found in the Nano forum. This will give you some ideas to how fellow members have started their tanks, and how they keep up with maintenance, how much they cost, and how much equipment youll really need. Or, alternatively, you can find several good books on the hobby, and give them a thourough read through.

how long does it take for a 2ft tank to cycle??i got told with marine it will take up to 2 years!!! ]

is this true??

and does anyone reccommend any other fish better then a clownfish in a 2ft tank??and if it wasnt a clownfish could i have more then one??

No, cycling, and maturing is different. I believe thats what your LFS has probably been thining about.

Cycling is where water parameters like nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia read zero. Nitrate may have a little reading though. A tank takes years, or over 6 months to fully mature.

is there any other fish that i can kep maybe a few of them in my 2ft tank?otr can i keep a mix of a clownfish and another fish??(i have seen that you have said that clownfish are aggressive so i am only checking)

and whats something hardy and pretty?

and by the way in marine do you have crossbreeding betweeen to species of the same scientific name?? eg will pomacanthus imperator x breed with pomacanthus imperator ??

IMO you really wont get much livestock (Fishwise) it a 20g, probably a couple of clowns & maybe 2 other species - perhaps Firefish or Maybe bangii Cardinal. You MAY get a way at a max with a Dwarf Angel - say a Coral Beauty

There is no fish store on earth that keeps every fish they have for sale in a condition that is indicative of what they should have in a permanant home. Their business is to stock to sell, and thats it. Its helpful also if they can give good advice, and yours telling you that it takes 2 years to cycle a marine tank shows that they arent the best LFS around.

Soooo, I think youre best sticking to the advice of these good people around here.

How many gallons is your tank? Clownfish are great beginner fish and I would reccoment some live rock as your filtration source as it always makes fish more comfortable to have places to hide.

i dont know how many gallons my tank is as im aussie and we do it in litres but i think it would hold about 54 litres.

i was wondering if i could keep these together??i am pretty sure tat i wont be able to but can you do me a massive favour and write me a list of what i can keep together in the tank?

i was also thinking fpr filtration i was going to get an UGF and put a powerhead on the pipe??woudl that be ok and i would probably put a submergible in there too.

and with the LR do you have to feed it??

and what else am i going ot have to get?do i have to get another light or just a different globe??
