A few questions about betta

I'm not new to this hobby of fishkeeping.

I have 10 gallon tropical community tank running right now so i know pretty much about fish keeping.

But, i'm new to keeping bettas.

Anyway, here are some questions before i buy a betta with bowl, and if you guys can answer those, it'll be really nice.

1. If i buy a bowl size about 1 gallon, what will i need? some gravel, maybe fake or real plant. Hm... is that it?

2. If i put a real plant in there, what would you recommend?

3. Does betta bowl need to be cycled? Or is it just okay to put some gravel from my established tank, leave it for a while, and put my betta?

4. Do i really need to buy food that is specialized for betta? I mean, i have color tetra food for neons, shirmp pellets, and algae tablets, and can't i just feed those?

5. Is lighting a must have?

1. Get a 1.5 gallon tank or bigger with Gravel or sand and a SILK plants

2. If u want a real plant try Java Fern

3. It doesnt really need to be cycled but buy some Betta Bowl Condiotaner

4. Yes Bettas are very picky eaters they preffer Frozen Foodz or Pellets for bettas

5. Lighting is not a must have but the betta would love u if u have lights

1) 1G is the recommended minimum size. i woudl opt for a 1.5G bowl if you can (though that'd be a pretty big bowl) i use plastic shoeboxes (see through) which are about $1.50 at walmart and holds 1.5G

Gravel is good, but not absoultely necessary. Note that if you put gravel in, it's gong to be harder to wash out beduase you'll have to rinse the gravel every water change to make sure it's clean. I recently switched to bare bottom on my betta tanks bcuase of this. I'ts easier to clean, and it's cleaner for the fish.

Silk plants/live plants are recommended. Plastic is nto good becuase betats like to swim through the plants, so plastics could hurt their fins. i'm not much of a real plant person, i just go with silk.

3) I didn't cycle any of my betta tanks becuase i do water changes twice a day, and since there is no gravel, there's no ta lot of bacteria anyways. Also, since you're only dealing with one fish, the ammonia levels won't get too high anyways.

4) yes, you'll ened at least the betta pellets becuase bettas dont' usually go for the flakes i know mine wont' eat any tropical flakes or shrimp pellets, or algae wafers. Frozen is also goodt hough

5) i dont' have a specialized "light" for all my betta tanks, their light is just the light that's in my room. so i think your fish will be fine unelss ur keeping him locked up a dark closet

Thx for those answers guys.

But, i have one more question.

Now i know that i should keep my betta bowl closed with lid in order to prevent betta jumping. (I didn't know such a thing. lol.)

So, if I buy a bowl for betta, does lid also come with that? or do i have to make a lid for it? And, if I get a lid, does that suppose to tightly close the opening or do i have to tilt or make holes or something?

i would recommend you put some kind fo plastic lid on there. Poke some holes in there to let air through (never put it compeltely tight fitting as the betat will need fresh air)

though most people say bettas are jumpers, none of mine have ever jumped, and i never keep a lid on

I saw from one site that putting coffee filter on the top of bowl with rubber band would work as cover.

Does that gonna be okay?

hmm never tried that myself, you could just try it rigth now without a betta, imo if the inside of the tank starts to get all humid, and drops of water begin to form on the side of the tank (evaporation/condensation) then it's porbably not letting enough air through

is a bettas poop shoot between thier ventral fin and anal fin? ..be cause it seems like its coming out of my bettas throat area? ..iono ..just wondering if somethings wrong with my betta..

If you want to see ur betta very happy and the best he will probably look maybe try a 3 + gallon tank.

3 gallons are expensive espeacially when u got almost 10 bettas....

Yeah, I wanna put my betta in 3+ gallong tank. Of course.

But, I don't have enough money to start another tank, and also I wanna put a betta bowl in living room for kind of decoration also.

Anyway... I'm gonna get a betta soon and see what happens.

Bettas will survive in bowls, but are rather sad to me (though most betta fanatics do keep them that way). Bettas are a tropical fish and are much happier in a tank with tropical-temperature water (i.e. requires a heater). They are far more lethargic and prone to medical problems in room-temperature water. I keep my betta by himself in a 10-gallon tank (the "betta condo") at 78 degrees F. He's a fireball of activity and personality.

Unfortunately, there's no way (that I know of) that you can safely heat a fishbowl, so if you choose to keep them that way you have no real alternative. There is certainly no shortage of people who do it, but I couldn't bring myself to.

Also, bettas don't/won't eat flake and such because they are insect/meat eaters and have specific nutritional needs. Their digestive systems are not geared for much non-protein or plant matter, and they can't/won't accept the variety of foods that many fish will. That's why they generally won't eat non-betta food that's not specifically made to meet their needs (and some - including mine - won't even eat that). The Hikari Betta Biogold is commonly considered the best commercial betta food and most bettas, though not all, will accept it. They also LOVE frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, so treat him with some of those, too. Mine will also eat daphnia (frozen or freeze-dried), but doesnt' seem to care for brine shrimp or tubifex. Your mileage may vary.

My stand on this, please dont get mad.

dont get the fish if you cant house it in a PROPER tank. This means ATLEAST 3 gallons. Why is any other fish different than a betta? other fish get tanks to fit their needs I.E. 3 inch fish 3 gallon tank. Why should a bette be different?So why buy 10 bettas if you cannot afford to have tanks for 10 bettas?

I personally can not stand to see a betta in any kind of bowl no matter how good the keeper is. Why dont we all go an keep angel fish and plecos in bowls? I know people would get very mad to say the least.
