You can get the data back, with software, if you take the PS3 itself apart to get to the HDD (assuming it is a conventional HDD with normal formatting...I'm not a PS3 owner, but there is a chance to get data back off any HDD formatted with FAT32 and NTFS) The software isn't cheap though and it involves dismanteling the PS3 to get to the HDD. I wouldn't advise it unless there was realy important data on it, even if you know what you are doing

All the best

I can feel some kinda situation comin on at yours tonight .... Remember if its an emergency dial 999 , anything else doesnt get any attention LMAO !!!!

Tell him don't worry, say to him he can have fun playing the games to get it all back again

As long as he hasn't played it since the erasing was done it's fixable. Most memory cards for cameras these days come with recovery software that could help bring it back. Otherwise there is more expensive (and thourough) software out there that scans a HDD and recovers.

Thing is, when someone deletes something from a HDD, it's not really deleted at all; rather the flag if you will that tells the OS where the information on the HDD is physically located is deleted. Then the data you thought you deleted hangs on your HDD until it gets written over by something else as you continue to use your computer/PS3 what have you.

You should be able to recover data.

No way, it formats the whole drive. Sorry to hear that, like Truckasauras said you can download saves off of the internet. :D

I asked my son (19) and he said no sorry, best just to start the games again but that can take long (?) and looked very sad for your son.

he understands the loss!

Ah who care's what loss, buy the kid an XBox 360, that'll put hair on his chest! (kidding) sorry, Microsoft made me insensitive (Vista, again) but just tell your son don't worry, if it's totally lost he should be able to play the game back.

Oi, necropost.
