If you actually look at what they have done, it is quite a feat. This is an exercise in Artifical Intelligence. The computer is able to analyse every possible move and counter move from every single position on the board. Essentially it is utilising a large memory base to anticipate and plan the next move.

This sort of ability can be used in future planning devices. A computer which can analyse every single possible outcome can then work out the best action to take (hence the "no lose").

This is almost certainly the field of excellence for these reseearchers, and there is little doubt that artificial intelligence will become extremely important within the next 50-150 years. Just because you cannot see direct benefit in research, does not mean it has no benefit.

evidently you can see how wars get started! over minute things, though i bet it took them no more then a week to do these obviously nerds and i bet its just a hobby they thoguht they would do in there spare time so maybe there saving the world and creating the game in the same days ... obviously peopel who have created that cant have much social lives can they!

Theres enough money out there to cater to all fields of science.
Cancer is constantly researched, as are most issues that are viewed with the same importance.
I see your original point Toppmann but its a criticism that can be aimed at the entire human race;
Considering the destruction we cause to the planet, in the name of better 'moral' procedure we all as individuals have things we could contribute or perhaps not contribute to the greater good.
I'm afraid, however, that it just isn't (IMHO) realistic.

As has been touched upon most science is interlinked, Alexander Fleming for example, didn't attempt to discover Penicilin but his pursuit of scientific knowledge and development inadvertently resulted in its discovery.

my point was, theres more productive things they could be doing, if u disagree and think that is the absoulte best use of their time then fair enough everyone is entitled 2 their own opinion.
