i've just been to one of the fish shops in my area who are normally quite good and reliable. they have this new setup for male fighters, which is like a lot of tiny glass boxes about 10cm by 15cm. seriously less than a pint of water for each fish with a filtration system that connects to them all. there were all these poor fighters looking droopy and just sat on the bottom of their 'tank'. i asked one of the guys that work there what on earth was going on and he just said that it saves space instead of having a fighter in one of the big tanks either on its own or with other fish.

when i asked why they were all sat on the bottom the actually turned round and said that the filtration system built into the contraption wasnt good enough and caused spikes of ammonia and nitrates and stuff and he toddled off!!!!!1

all these poor fish are just dying and they dont give a toss.

i will not be going back to that shop again. i hate it when people are just in it for money and not for the passion or love of these beautiful fishes. it feel sick

hmmmm i'm just glad we don't get bettas over here like they keep them in US is walmart and petco, in tiny plastic cups witha snap shut lid, no filter, no heating, no light, no cleaning....loads just die.
Alot of pet stores use 'betta barracks' and some breeders, my LFS nearly got one but their cups were way to small, the best LFS for males here has a betta barracks, maybe a little bigger than the ones you describe but they are always flaring at neighbours and usually very bright, the keepers sort of right, it saves them getting ripped to pieces after being thrown in any old tank.
So their good and bad, and at least they are only temporary homes....it's bad that the filtration isn't enough for them though!

these ones were tiny! i couldnt believe it. i agree with the not putting them in tanks where they will get shredded by the other fish but this was beyond a joke!!!

thats the size they were!

yeah that's just cruel isn't it!!!!

I think the ones at the better LFS for males here probably hold about 2-3 litres of water each so it's not insanely cramped like those the poor betta wouldn't even be able to move :(
