That goop looks like the remains of a dead snail. I have had it happen several times.

To me it looks more like the web that is thrown out by either vermetid (sp) snails or one of the pest worm species.

They can proliferate very quickly in your aquarium and be a real nuisance - as they get bigger so does the web and it can cover/choke your corals.

Can you get a closer pic for an id?

I fried it this morning after I googled it and heard that it might be a pest.

Just keep your eye on it as they burrow down in the rock and can just when you think you've got it the #40## thing pops it's head out again!

May be worth putting milliput over the hole.
