Hey everyone.

As some may know I bought a 71 Liter tank the other day.
It came with a Heater but I checked the Watt today as I am cleaning the tank ready to set up and it's 300w!
I phoned the guy and he said thats the one he has used for a year and had no problems with it at all.

Any advice?

Ive said this a lot, some may disagree. But it will be fine, the only difference with a bigger heater is that if it gets stuck on, it will fry the tank much faster. A smaller heater will still fry the tank, just takes longer. So obviously if it fries with a smaller heater you will have more time to notice.

But providing you keep an eye on the temperature, it will be ok. I use a 200w with my 60l with no problems.

Personally I'd be inclined to buy a brand new heater that's more fitting for the tank size. I'd be worrying all the time about a second hand heater/high wattage heater going haywire on me.

As said, as long as it works it should be ok, but I'd worry

I could always get a diff heater at a later date, I haven't even filled this tank yet so still has cycle etc before fishies can go in

Heater will be fine, it will warm the water quicker. Just keep an eye on the temp. Does it have a max temp on it?

It has one of them dial things where ya set the temp for the water.
erm not sure on Max temp the guy said he bought it new and it's been well looked after.

As long as the thermostat works it will be fine

I will keep an eye on it, I have a floaty thermometer anyway which I check daily by habbit.
Will the heater be ok touching the glass at the bottom of the tank? it has it's own area with nothing else in as it;s boxed off by plastic.

Can you slant it a little so that i dosent touch the bottom.

I'd angle the filter so the outflow pasts right over the heater element. That way the heat will be spread fast into the rest of the tank and prevent a hot spot above the heater

i would be massively inclined to change it, i lost all my fish when i used a 300w in a 160L tank.. it over heats so fast that you have no time to do anything, i got up in the morning and they were all boiled :(

of course at the end of the day the choice is yours :)
