6ft High Tank

I would strongly recommend to not get this tank.
In my view it is a waste of money. You could only keep a couple of
fish in a tank of those proportions as the surface area of the bottom
determines how many fish you could keep. Added to the fact that it
is very innconvenient to clean and place plants and decor in.

That kind of tank is a very specialist tank. Unless you really know what you are doing, it is a disaster.

The surface area relative to it's volume is tiny, which means managing your gas exchange is going to be difficult. Your stocking levels will be tiny relative to the water volume.

The small hood will restrict the size of lighting units you can fit, but at the same time, the depth will demand very bright lighting.

The small footprint will concentrate all the weight of a large tank onto a very small amount of floor, unless you are on a concrete floor, you run the risk of seeing your pride and joy disappearing through a wooden floor.

I could go on...

Thanks for the info from both you guys, The main reason for getting this type of tank was that my girlfriend doesn't like the cabinets you buy with tanks from a shop. Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions for good tanks with a cool new look?.

Well, if you mean like a RIO Juwel cabinet, when you refer to it, you could instead try these new retro steel ones, that hold 2 ft tanks or smaller. They are the traditional shape. It probably isn't possible or you'd have already said, but tanks can be mounted into walls, or in cupboards, or anything else like that.

What does she like? What is it about the cabinets she does not? Can you make one she likes? Is her objection, (as experienced by the author of this message), nothing to do with the cabinets, more to do with her dislike of tanks, size, space, cost, smell, etc. ? All else fails, http://www.dating.co.uk/ .....

I have an octagonal tank, not got pictures uploaded yet. It is 29US gallons 18 1/2 inch by18 1/2 inch. The height is 26 inches. I just manage to reach the bottom of this tank, planting can be very difficult. I have 4 15 inch tubes over it and can just about do feeding with space left.

I would not go for anything deeper. The maintenance on those tall tanks would be horrendous. I would even compare it to key hole surgery, you would need long tools in such a small space. Real plants would be out too as the light would not penetrate that deep.

Hi

I wouldnt personally go for a vertical tank i think horizontal ones are much more attractive and like mentioned previously that one would be hard to keep clean, plant and also you couldnt have that many fish. This is the tank im getting next, i think the stand looks nice with it.

A larger tank will need something strong to support the weight, hence them having cabinets. Its also a good place to store equipment. I have a 60 litre tank that has a silver stand that is nice which she may like the look of...

All of our tanks have customs built stands.

I found I do not like the "shop" bought stands so we (meaning Andy built I supervised) built very plain stands but then put on nice doors.

Not only did this mean we could have the stand exactly how we wanted it, we could have any size tank and not worry about buying a stand to fit and it actually meant we saved a large amount of money.

When you buy a complete set (tank & stand) you seem to pay an awful lot of money for the stand.

These are a few of the pics of our stands mid way through build and finished (ish) (please excuse the cats - they like to "help")

If you do want help building stands I recommend you go here (adjusting the sizes accordingly) and you get one of these - they are most helpful
