i love the idea of having a big feature tank in my house.
i found a local guy selling a 5x2x18" tank, but it appears to only 4-6mm thick? every LFS i talk to only sells tanks with glass 10mm thick in 5x2x2 (and similar sizes)

is there a general rule as to the thickness of glass for tanks?
the guy has been running his tank for a couple years with no obvious drama's.
i decided not to buy it off the guy as he wanted too much cash for it, ,but would still be nice to know

if the tank is 18inches high then you can get away with 6mm for the sides and maybe 8mm for the base. However, most tanks have a 10mm base if they are 2ft wide and if the sides are 2ft high then 10mm for them too.

eg: 4ft long x 18inch wide x 18inch high.... glass would normally be 6-8mm base & 6mm sides
eg: 4ft long x 2ft wide x 18inch high.... glass would normally be 8-10mm base & 6mm sides
eg: 4ft long x 2ft wide x 2ft high.... glass would normally be 10mm base & 10mm sides

eg: 5ft long x 2ft wide x 18inch high.... glass would normally be 10mm base & 6mm sides
eg: 5ft long x 2ft wide x 2ft high.... glass would normally be 10mm base & 10mm sides

eg: 6ft long x 18inch wide x 18inch high.... glass would normally be 8-10mm base & 6mm sides
eg: 6ft long x 2ft wide x 18inch high.... glass would normally be 10mm base & 6mm sides
eg: 6ft long x 2ft wide x 2ft high.... glass would normally be 10mm base & 10mm sides
eg: 6ft long x 2ft wide x 30inch high.... glass would normally be 12mm base & 12mm sides
eg: 6ft long x 3ft wide x 3ft high.... glass would normally be 15-18mm base & 15mm sides

sweet, thanks for that.

i cant think how much it would cost in materials to make a 6x3x3  would be so cool tho!!! :hyper:
