50G Low Tech Planted

Sorry, my opinion of a high tech tank is high light, not co2

yes, its medium, or the high end of low lighting if that makes sense.

Thanks cazzie :good:

I still think that is high light, the WPG rule is based on the old T12 tubes, T5's have a lot less refraction so a lot more of the light they produce is projected into the tank, you might just get away with not using CO2, but you'll need to dose some form of Gluturaldehyde a liquid form of delivering Carbon, Easy Carbo is a brand I once used, with careful lighting periods you should be ok.

Thanks Standby :) I am using up my Flourish Excel at the moment and putting a capful in per night, and 5 capfuls after a water change (50% weekly). I will then use my EasyCarbo.

I am going to start using my Profito, but not sure how much to dose?

The lights are pretty bright, I wasn't sure if the tech part referred to the lighting or the Co2 part :)

It's a lose term, Low Tech is generally for tanks that require no fertilisers etc.

Looking great Chilli,

I highly recomend hygrophilia polysperma as a backround plant. Give a real lush bushy effect :)

Ah right, that wouldn't be mine then? As I need to dose ferts or else I would be over run with algae.

Thanks angelfishguy :good: I might get some of that as well, but trying not to get too carried away incase it doesn't work out :)

I think the terms go hand in hand with a collection of things: high light plus co2 plus ferts = high tech. Absence of added ferts/co2 and low light = low tech. Although obviously its a sliding scale and there are middle grounds and extremes :)

Baby not want to come out and see the new setup yet then?! ;)

Hehe baby is due tomorrow! We are picking up our new car Friday, so what's the betting he decides to come Thursday?

With the determining factor being the light. Too much light without the appropriate nutrients and carbon will often go wrong but having ferts and co2 with not much light still works ;)

Best of luck with the baby! It's funny, most people are packing away tanks when a baby is on its way :p

lol that would be sods law wouldn't it! Average pregnancy actually lasts 41 weeks rather than forty though, so you're probably good until next week ;) and now to prove me wrong he'll come tomorrow! baby will come when he's ready :good:

Haha, could never get rid of my tanks. They are keeping me going through these last few weeks, gives me something to focus on :good:

Yeah, he'll come when he's ready I agree. Tried loads of things to get him moving but no luck so far lol.

Unfortunately the Riccia I won on eBay is not going to be posted out now. The seller very nicely let me know that it was coming away slightly at the corners (it's grown on mesh) and I said that wasn't a problem, to send anyway. But he's now had a closer look and it's coming off from the middle too, as he said he mustn't have fastened it properly. So he's refunding me.
I am now going to have a look about at other plants, so any other suggestions would be good :good:

Patience :) Enjoy the last few days. Spend some time with your other half, get your hair done or your nails (maybe not your nails if you're gonna be putting your hands in the fish tank lol  ), get a massage or some reflexology, go shopping or out to lunch with friends, because those are the things you wont have time for when he's arrived! Don't rush him - he knows when he is cooked, if you try to make him come sooner it can lead to all sorts of issues. Nature is better at judging these things than anyone else, so if he's not here yet, it's because he's not ready. Have faith in your body's ability to do it's job properly :)

Riccia doesn't attach to things, so even if it was attached when it arrived to you, at some point you'd still have to take it off and reattach it. But if you want a carpet then you could do a moss carpet? Java moss attached/glued to slate has a similar effect, although less vibrant green. Or there are actual plants that you can plant for a carpet effect - grasses etc. There are some good examples in some of the other journals - Ianho has a HC carpet in his corner tank, and ps3steveo has some pogostemon helferi in his fry tank - you could have a look at those? Although they do require some effort planting at first I personally prefer they effect they give. But that's just me :)
