Hi all ,

My platy has just dropped her 4th lot of fry tonight :) i only found 3 survivors but there were alot of dead fry floating around the top too they were all really clear and tiny some were even bent and looked a little deformed :( the rest of her drops before this were all healthy when born and i had no fry die before this any one have any ideas what could have caused this drop to turn out like this ?

The only thing i can think of that is different to the other times is i recently removed the plastic plant she used to give birth in and the fry liked to hide there too could this habe anything to do with it ?

Thanks stefx

Aww that sucks.

It could just be a werid cruel twist of nature. It could be that the pregnancy was aborted due to the genetic issues with the fry, or maybe some form of stress can also cause them to miscarry. Have you added any new fish or water to the tank recently?

Do you know how long she was pregnant before she dropped her fry? It could be she went into premature labour. Just a thought.

Hi thanks for the reply it does suck but im happy ive got 3 lil survivors :) i have just rehomed around 40-50 fry from her last drops so i was missing looking after them lol

I havnt added any new fish or water to the tank but she does seem to have had them a little earlier than usual this time she wasnt fully squared off or as big as she normally is when shes about to drop so maybe thats why we lost a lot . This should be her last drop anyhow because she hasnt been in with a male for a couple of months now .

I had this issue with my guppy and my lfs said it can be due to overbreeding with the same male. I don't see how that is right but with no other answer I took that answer and put it behind me

Ninja is right. They can drop prematurely and often the fry are dead or deformed. They can also be deformed due to in-breeding. I had a female platy that bred with her brother - all the fry were born deformed. I've since moved that male on so there's no chance of it happening again.

Good luck with the 3 survivors though :)

in-breeding or overbreeding with the same male. or breeding brother to sister is not the problem

Well this mornin i am down to 2 which are really slow moving and dont look good , im currently keeping them at 78 temp in the main tank i have always raised them at this temp and they were fine but i have just turned the tank i used as the fry nursury into a shrimp tank as i didnt think she would have any more do you think they could have a good chance in there at 75 or better in the main tank in a breedet box ?

As you seem to know more than I do I'll leave it to you to answer any further questions

78 Temp- is a bit too high when keeping them a breeder box it’s so too easy to pollute the water by over feeding the fry, will do better in the main tank Main course of fry dying is from over feeding and poor water quality ,

As fish48 said, the problem is not in-breeding, period. I have tanks that I have intentionally inbred for well over 5 years, figure at least 10 generations, and I have no trouble at all with them. The problem you may be facing is something that stressed the female into an early drop or some similar factor that caused the fry to be dropped before they were developed enough to survive outside the female. I always place a female that is carrying fry into a peaceful setting at least a week before she is likely to drop. That way stresses are minimized and fry survival is enhanced. Each of us has different resources in the way of spare tanks and cycled filters so that may not be an option that we can all use, but it works great for me.

Thanks oldman i think it probably was stress related , good news though the one i thought had died is still alive and kicking :) it is probably a good idea to transfer her to my 2ft tank in the future when i feel she is near , good to hear imbreeding isnt a problem as i have her in with one of her older fry from months ago still not sure what sex it is as im rubbish at that .
