Hey wheres_flo,

This is a link to the profiles section on C-F.com, lot of pictures that you bro should like.

Tanganyika shell dwellers

Hope he See's something he likes and yes I wouldn't recommend anything other than shell dwellers for a tank that size.

hey tanks a lot :p

thank u soooo much, he seems keen on them and likes the pic's!! :D

now i just have to find someone who seels them..lol.. my lfs only sells juwel, krbis??.. an malawi so im on the hunt..lol, what about the fish that are yellow with black strips, i no a very vague discription but i have also seen these fish and look cool, they begin with an A i think... but i no my fish shop has them :-(

Then you should know what yellow labs are and know there malawi and cant go in that tank.

UGF- out dated and certainly not advisable for shell dwellers IMHO toss it on the trash pile.

your tank is too small for much else then shellies.

kribs and apistos and the like are sensitive to water changes so your little brother must be vigilant ad not screw them up.

I'm curious, when you had oscars, what size tank were they in and how many?

when you say malawi, what type?

look up dwarf jewel cichlids or rams they could easily fit in a 2 foot tank, careful though most of the dwarf cichlids are sensetif to bad water conditions so maybe not recommended if hes not really that keen in fishkeeping :)

i would most certainly go with shell dwellers, most stay small about 2 or less inches and will breed readily, i hear they breed a lot right after water changes just remember 2-3 shells per fish how many gallons is the tank? sand substrate is best for shell dwells as they like to dig holes for there shells to put them in.

hope that helps

Your probably thinking about melanochromis auratus

Yellow Labs don't have black stripes.

Now I could be completely wrong here as my eyes may not be working but is that not a black stripe on the dorsal fin???? Also very poor quality labs can have black stripes on there bodies.

Why r they not suitable for shell dwellers?

Undergravel filters don't tend to work well with ciclids as almost all of them will dig down to it, and pretty much make it ineffective at best... a nasty place for things to rot, killing your fish at worst.

Spot on - UG filters only work if there is a substancial layer of substrate in place. Cichlids tendancy to dig and therefore expose the UG plates makes them pretty unmanageable in these types of setup.
