29 Gallon Stocking After Winter Storm

albino corys rock, i was just making a suggestion ! :p
and ottos are just one of the few fish around here that i'd know of as an option (the lfs here sucks...), all we have here are common plecos, hillstream loaches, and ottos.... though we did have a royal pleco...
but if you can find some smaller plecos, then i'd go ahead and buy them, only reason i never buy plecos is, like i said, they get too bed (generally)

if you are still interested in a snail go for apple snails as these cannot mate unless you have a male and a female unlike other snails that just reproduce by themselves

so if you buy 1 apple snail you will still only have one apple snail in a years time , where if you buy 1 say ramshorn you could have 100's of them in a years time

cheers Sarahx

so does this stocking sound okay
6 harlequins,6 glo lites,6 black phantoms, or 6 black neons Of course only one species just listing a few
5 corys
1 gourami of some sort
5 red eye tetra, 5 zebra danio,5 bleeding heart ?
and a couple shrimp?
how does that sound?

hmm...
in my opinion, those are some really awesome fish to choose from (even though they were previously listed) and it's really hard to choose which ones are best, lmao. at this point, it seems more of personal opinion.
i, personally would go with 6 black phantoms, a blue gourami and 5 bleeding hearts... and the corys :p

and now that you said shrimp, that just changes the whole conversation :p, only because some fish like to pick on (or eat) shrimp, lol
luckly, all of the fish you listed (but the gouramis, and possibly the red eyes... depending on the group) would go fine with the shrimp.

I've been looking at getting some shrimp myself, but i find it's probably gonna be best to start off with a real basic shrimp, like a ghost (or glass) shrimp, just to make sure none of your fish will decide to make a meal of the shrimp... Now, after i'd say a week or two, if the shrimp are still unharmed, you can move onto selecting your shrimp (this is long after stocking with fish).
now, if you don't like you ghost shrimp (they're usually cheap, and used as feeders) then you can get rid of them, and you can pick another shrimp you like... only problem is, some shrimp have certain needs, and different jobs... I'll list some of my favorite shrimp, followed by their job (i want to make a just shrimp tank... lol)

Ghost (glass) Shrimp - Algae eater (basic of basics :p)
Amano shrimp - Algae eater (awesome cleaner)
Red Cherry Shrimp - Algae eater
Red Crystal Shrimp - Algae eater
Singapore Flower Shrimp (aka, Bamboo Shrimp) - Water cleaner
Vampire Shrimp - Water cleaner
(Water cleaners are good for keeping the tank clean, but sometimes require special foods, as they feed from the water, instead of off of surfaces... It is good to keep them with live plants, as the plants can either give off benificial foods, or the dieing matter from them can be caught by the small fans... If you get one, try and make sure it doesn't feed from the bottom too often, as this could end up damaging their specialized fans)

Also, you could try a crayfish, or lobster (freshwater), but you might have a problem with them eating the fish, depending on the species.

I could go on and on about this stuff... as you can see from all of my posts, i tend to do my fair share of research :p !

I like your idea about stocking I really would like phantoms but I dont know if I can find them same goes with the harlequins.I know I can find bleeding heartt so here is the list
6 harlequins or a fish of same size(black phantom,black neon.glo lite
5 bleeding heart,or red eye tetras
5 corys
some shrimp
and A blue gourami

well, if you only need that one more school of tetras, i'd suggest either the glow lites, or a fish that has the same shape (as they will generally swim as one big school), such as rosy tetras
plus, blue gouramis aren't really the beeeest you could get, but that's just my suggestion. you should go with any gourami that you want, that is at least good with other fish.
also, you still gonna get the albino corys? i would have gotten some myself if i could have found any

my harlequins are amazing fish i had 6 but when i increased to 9 they are a lot happier so i would go for

10 harlequins
4 bleeding heart tetras - these should swim with the harlequins - my minnows did when they were in the same tank
as for corys pandas (slightly smaller than albinos) are a really playful type and spend a lot of the time swimming around the middle of the tank

you could have 15 pygmy corys in there or 10 hasbrosus as these are smaller corys , my hasbrosus are quite a bit bigger than the pygmys but smaller than a panda

good luck and let us knopw what you decide

as for snails i forgot to mention zebra (nerite) snails they are also single sexed like apple snails but their young can only live in brackish water so you could have more than one of these and no babies

yes I have the albanio corys.I have kept them for about 2 years and they are pretty big.
so you are saying (randy) I should not get a blue gourami?
Ill try to explain this problem to you if you did not understand
ok I live in a little town and we have no lfs so therefore I have to go to a big city which is about an hour away,
Then when I get there I will pick out of these fish glo lite, harlequins, bleeding hearts, red eye tetra.
If there are harlequins I will defintily get them they are just rare around here I have not even seen one before besides on the internet. So I will decide out of the fish I just listed.I just need to know a couple diffrent types I can Have so that when I go up there I will be able to have more than just one choice and Ill know what to get, thats why I have to ask about so many diffrent types of fish.
Sorry if I am being a pain thats just why I have to keep asking.

William

oh don't worry, it's no bother at all.
first off, about the gourami, the blue gourami is a really nice fish, but i'm just saying it's not the best... especially if you get a male, as, like i said before, they tend to be either shy, aggressive, or both.
about the harlequin, they're not the only kind of rasbora you can get. You could go for a False Harlequin (nearly the same thing), stuff like that. Rasboras, from what i know of, tend to be just like tetras, but not as common... So you could just go on sites like...
http://www.liveaquaria.com/
or
http://fishprofiles.com/
these sites is where I get most of my info, but I do also go by dozens of other sites, and personal experience. These sites I find are best to just look for cool fish, tank size, length, food and any special needs. So these could probably help. (i know live aquaria is an online fish store, but i just use it as a "fish finder")
and as for the getting a list of fish, that's a very smart thing to do. I find getting a big list of fish you like, and then choosing what's available is one of the best ways you can "shop" for fish. I too have to either list my fish, or memorize them, since I'm constantly only looking for certain fish from certain places... It's hard to keep up, especially with a good drive away from either any fish store, or any GOOD fish store.

yeah I have found out that rasboras are alot less common than tetras!I have only see a scissortail rasbora and thats it thats why I have to think of other fish to get beside them because they are soo rare around here.
By the way what do you think about the stocking??

Rasboras tend to be hard to find, unless you buy them from a store with a good selection of fish, (like an actual fish store, or a larger pet store), but if you buy fish from places with a small selection (places like walmart, an 'Express', smaller pet stores) then chances are you won't, and probably will never find anything more than tetras, corys, goldfish and other more common fish, like convict cichlids and angel fish.
I only have one store around here that sells rasboras, but it's a good half hour away... And that's when there's no traffic ! :| So it's not too surprising that they're that hard to find... If it's a small store that is.
And what stocking ??

I got some good news randy I went to petsmart and they have both HARLEQUINS and BLACK PHANTOMS!!!!
So could I go with 7 harlequins,6 black pantoms,5 green or peppered corys(keeping my 5 ablanio in 20g) and a centerpeice fish which I still havent found yet.Can you give me some suggestions on a centerpeice and about my stocking??

That's some AWESOME news ! Glad things worked out !
and now, for a centerpiece fish...
Well, as we discussed many times before, the gourami is probably your best bet...
blue gourami would be most recommended in my books... As long as it's female (males have pointed dorsal fins, and get a little larger)
You could choose something like a cichlid, I absolutly love my convict cichlid, full of spunk (when she needs to be) and always active and happy to see me, she greets me each time i walk into the room. So they're probably your best bet for personality (males get a lot larger than females, and males tend to be a bit more aggressive... but there tends to be no huge difference between the two besides size...)
-firemouths (aggressive... but it also depends on the fish)
-rams... could probably two or three actually (german blue, gold, bolivian)
-Keyhole Cichlids i hear are nice and laid back... but still have personality
-Cockatoo cichlids are expensive, but i hear pay off fairly well (personality, etc)
-Rainbows, some these guys get a good size, so only a few species could go in your tank (guys like australian, neon, Axelrodi, -Madagascan could all go in your tank)
-You could get away with an angel fish... I, personally think a tank 18" high is enough, but others may not agree with me... Also, the tetras may give them a scare at first, so it may not seem like a good idea, but eventually they'll get used to the movement.
-Silver Dollars... These guys are sweet, just they get big (6") and they're herbivores, so they'd either need special flakes (herbivore flakes), vegetable matter (not sure what) and/or algae pellets. But if you plan to put in plants, they're not worth getting, as the silver dollar will have no problem making a snack of them ! :|
