22 Litre Nano Tank Surprise For 21St!

Aww Idris is gorgeous.

There are too many snails, not enough for me to treat the tank or anything, wouldn't have put them in there by choice though!

Thanks! He's very tame and comes to my hands to collect food!

I got some new plants today! I searched for snails and found lots of snail eggs which i removed OFC!

The plants i got today are: Ludwigia repens, Cardamins iyrata and Microsorum pteropus! Can't wait to get them in there! Lots of little piece of slate (round and chunky not sharp don't worry!) to scatter round the bottom of my tank too! Very excited!

to get rid of snails and snail eggs on plants my Dad taught me a great trick. He adds the new plants to a bucket of warm salty water and leaves them in there for a good 20 minutes before rinsing well under a running tap. It's worked every time so far

Wow! I never knew that! Thanks for the tip

 I'll try it next time!

in theory it should kill snails and eggs as the salt dries them up ... a bit like putting salt down for slugs.

I've used the trick with all my plants when they were new and I've not seen any pest snails in my tank(s) for years

Me I just squish so called pest snails and feed them to my fish. Plus having just inherited 5 Clown loaches I am going to have to start breeding pest snails.

Hey Guys, so here's an updated look at the tank

But first, has anyone got any experience using hemicanthus cuba? I was hoping to produce a carpet with it and was wondering if any of you could give me some pointers? Cheers

I've ordered so Hemicanthus 'cuba' to try and form a carpet along the lower section of my tank. I was wondering if any of yu have any experience growing carpets/using hemicanthus species? If so any tips?

Cheers

Looks lovely. Idris stands out nicely against the green.

I can't help with the plant though sorry.

I tried hemianthus before but I tried it with fish in the tank before it became fully established.  The cories just disturbed it all and inside a couple of weeks there was none left in the substrate but I had some tremendous floating plants

That shouldn't be a problem if you only have Idris in there though. Unless he's very naughty :D

A carpet crossed my mind when I set my tank up but decided against it very quickly due to the fact that I have cories and kuhlis. It wouldn't have stood a chance! I think they look lovely though.

Why have you decided to try a carpet? Do you like the look of them, or want to try some shrimp, or both?

I have a friend at university that has a beautiful Hemianthus callitrichoides 'cuba' carpet and it just looks fab! I wanted to try my hand at growing one myself! If i didn't have a betta I'd deffo try a few shrimp, I heard Idris might find them tasty though?

So.. the plants came today and the kind seller put two freebie plant pouches in there too!

My plant purchases:
Hemianthus callitrichoides 'cuba'
Alternanthera sp. Red
Staurogyne repens (free!)
Eleocharis pusilla (free!)

Here's the first three plants laid out ready for planting

Look how well this Hemianthus callitrichoides 'cuba' travelled - so fresh and healthy!

I'll get it all planted and show guys you the new arrangement! I think the anubias may be a little too big for the tank now so i will move it over to another of my tanks to make room for a carpet!
