20gallon Journal - Updated Daily - Indir

Yeah was hoping someone would know so i dont got to make lots of posts.. Guess i have no choice.

Man im hoping the damn thing will drop soon lol. Ive decided on the fish i want finally :) But im going to stock slowly, starting with the danios as they are most hardy, just incase it hasnt fully completed the cycle.

Going to get danios for the top area of the tank, cockatoo dwarf cichlid for the middle and Bristlenoses for the bottom (most likely).

Just got a question though. Would these be okay together? Read somewhere that the cichlids may get agressive? :S but only found that on one site

Regards,
Indir

Sounds like it will be a nice tank.

Yes alot of Cichlids are agressive. You definitly had better get some advice or research them more as I'm pretty sure that lots of the species are. I do know that the Dwarf Cichlid is generally not agressive. Most keep any species as long as there are 2 femal and 1 male otherwhise the poor femal cops a hiding  .
Definitly post on the Cichlid forum and they will answer your questions. :good: I'm not sure for a comminity tank though. :stupid:

Thanks mate, i didn't have much time last night as it was getting late and i had to get up early for uni. But im going to research it now :) Thanks for the help my friend. Ill definetly pop over to the cichlid forum now :) Ill have to find their scientific name too. Thanks again.

Hey how can i get my water temp down? My heater is set to minimum (20) but the water never drops past 26 or 27. Cant figure out how to make it drop for when i get some fishies, if they need it lower :)

Indir

the cockatoo's are fiesty but not agressive as such, they'll be fine with the danios and BN's.... the danio's will be out of their way and plec's are armour coated so the cockatoo's wouldn't be able to do them any damage even if they wanted too... and it's unlikely that they'd want too.

Okay cool, thats reassuring then. Ill post on the cichlid forum now about the cave places.

Any ideas on how to reduce my temp a few degrees if i need too? I cant keep it below 26 lol. Its 26 or 27 ALWAYS :S

Indir

is your heater set as low as it can be?

it's most likely the ambient temp in the room that your in, if you create more surface agitation it may copme down but don't fret about 1/2 degrees temp difference from ideal, the fish won't mind.

Yes i have it set at minimum (20 degrees celcius) which is why i was a bit concerned. If they will be okay then i will leave it and only try to change if they seem to be stressing about it. Thank you Wiggle. How was Ians first day at uni by the way? :p Was confusing as heck for me lol

At the moment my plan is 6 Danios, 3 or 4 bristlenose catfish and 3 or 4 cockatoo dwarf cichlids.

If i wanted to breed the bristlenose, how many males to females would i need? (I would ask in the catfish section, but you seem to know a fair bit about them as you own them. Plus your very helpful here :D )

Thank you,
Indir

he's not gone yet (time difference..... it's 9:30am here)

never bred the BN's myself so can't help you there I'm afraid.

I don't have the room for breeding so I never set out to intentionally breed my fish and if they do breed I just leave it up to natural selection, very little survives but it's best that way as I don't have room for loads of babies.

I do know BN's are supposedly quite easy to breed but that's about as far as my knowledge goes, I just have 1 so it'd be a hard push for him to manage it by himself!

Haha thats a good one :p Laughed at him managing it himself xD Okay well i just want to experience breeding fishies of all sorts :) Brother needs a clean up team anyway lol.

Sorry forgot about the time difference (silly me) :) 8:30pm here lol

Should i keep feeding the tank even tho nitrites are off chart? Or just wait for my nitrites to get back down. I have had no ammonia in my tank for a while now :)

Indir

you need to keep adding 5ppm of ammonia every 24 hrs or the ABacs will die off, don't worry about the nitrites for now

Well im feeding the tank so i have no idea if/when it gets to 5ppm lol. Can't get pure ammonia anywhere near me apparently, damned thing :( So im feeding the tank finely crushed flake food so it will sink and rot lol. Any other things i could use to get it to 5ppm easier?

Indir

no sorry, too early in the morning, i forgot you were using fish food for a minute there and misunderstood you.

i thought you were doign a pure ammonia cycle but had stopped adding the ammonia, you mean you're still adding fish food but getting no ammonia reading on your test kit. that's a good thing, means you have a good colony of ABacs, but you have to keep feeding it and wait for the nitrites to drop

Okay thats what i needed to know :D Thanks miss wiggle :)

If i say put double the normal feed i would give for a full tank, would it increase ammonia ammount? Ill test again 24 hours after i put the food in after i get my answer to this question lol

Oh by the way, anyone seen those fish that can live in a tree for several months? I read about it and can dig it up again if someone is interested in reading on it :)

Indir

yes that will give twice as much ammonia and cinsequently twice as much bacteria (to a point, as the limiting factor is space on the media for bacteria to grow)

Hmm okay, ill add twice as much in a hope to see no ammonia in 24 hours :) Thanks miss wiggle. I shall update with water data in 24 hours

Indir

Hi there Indir,

Are you going to be able to -find- those cockatoo cichlids? Just wondering. Perhaps you've seen them locally or have a close enough place that has them that ships. Just thinking that is another thing to plan.
