so theres a guy on ebay selling 20 mixed cichlid fry for £15 the only problem is hes keeping them in untreated tap water that he doesnt know the pH of or any of the water stats he seems to think because hes doing 20% water changes there ok like this the fish include marbled and striped convicts, cutteri and rainbow cichlids
wonder how long they will live

Are you going to buy them?

lol i dont think so would you buy something thats been badly looked after from day 1 the guys got other fish on now aswell fire mouths
he doesnt even do water tests i asked him the peramiters the fish are kept in and he couldnt even tell me the ph he just said he doesnt need to know the water stats because he does regular water changes

So? I don't know any of my water stats, haven't since about two weeks after I started keeping fish. I've never even tested for pH. I don't use dechlorinator, plenty of people don't.

how do you get the clorine out of the water then ?

untreated tap water isnt the end of the world.. what do you think the "old school`ers" did before declorinator? ( used to leave a bucket full of water for the chlorine to evaporate- cholomine however wont- which is more harmful)
i have swordtail fry and they live in untreated tap water.. and i honestly couldnt tell you what any of the stats are ..
come to think of it i dont even know the PH ( or anything else for that matter) of my oscar tank.. all my fish are very healthy and very happy.. certainly far from badly treated :)

in all honesty i did used to declorinate even if i was adding only a cup of tap water to a tank..till i found out i had been using the wrong product and wasnt declorinationg after all.. then as i saw no ill effects i stopped.

Usually if someone has well water, then a water conditioner is not needed, as well water does not contain chlorine and other harmful chemicals.

From what I know many water boards now do not at chlorine to water for treatment, and instead use oxygen free radicals, which do not have the same effect on fish.

It's worth getting in contact with your own water supplier to ask what they use as I'm sure many people use dechlorinator needlessly and could save themselves a lot of money.

My water board Veolia Three Valleys, DOES use chlorine. So I've bought a whopping 2.5L of pond dechlorinator - and I have to use a 1ml syringe to measure out 0.5ml per 14L bucket  This is going to last me absolutely donkey's years - before I was getting through 250ml of Tetra stuff every big water change (but I do have a lot of tanks!).

I never used to know my water parameters - in honesty I think if you have a mature tank and you never really change anything, then it's not so imperative. I have lots of tanks though, and at the moment am adding stock, so it's important that I have a test kit handy and know what's going on as nitrite spikes are a real risk with the type of fish I'm adding (usually groups of 3-5 inch clown loach as they come up).
