Picked up 2 stunning little L183 today and for a bargain price

Anyone have experience with them?

No but I'm interested in them too. I'd love to get a pair for breeding. If anyone has any info on where to get them in the US and any breeding them, I'd like to know too. Planet Catfish has some information on them but not much more than the basics.

Hey ~T~

got any pictures? do they have the solid seam along hte top fin and tail?

I've been after "true" L183's for ages but only found our starlights ever being sold as L183s....

No problem - sounds like you grabbed a bargin - nothing wrong with that :D

(not sure if its my PC playing up (as it has been this evening) but I cant see the pics :()

Hmmm thats weird, they work ok for me.What if you right click and copy/paste?

Btw I just read on another forum that unless they are kept below 7.0 their livers can fail??? :( Do you know if theres any truth to that?

£9 is a good bargain. I would've suspected they'd be more and those are some nice looking fish. The pics are showing up for me.

I have only ever seen them a few times for sale and always in poor condition and always for about £20-£25.They were actually labled as something daft like "sky blue bristlenose".

I would if I could mate but I wont be able to get back there till next week now and i'm pretty sure they will be gone. They are good at getting fish back in though esp if they well well so I can defo ask for you.

So does anyone have experience keeping these guys?I need to know if im doing them harm by keeping them in my slightly alkaline community tank.

our starlights are in a tank at 7.6 - and have been breeding - I've not lost any adults...

Ive done quite a bit of reading up on these as I intend to breed some myself.
I think the link to the lower PH comes from the fact they in natural conditions like *DARK* water. Apparently they like water with alot of tannins in it. So lots of new bogwood is perfect to get the right conditions. Naturally if you have alot of bogwood or tannins in the water your going to have lower PH. I would go for PH7 or just below but dont go too drastic. It depends on what water they have been bred in so sticking to 7 I would have though you cant go wrong.
The picture look good. Really pretty healthy fish :) Congrats on your bargain.

great looking fish ~T~. i picked up L-059 yesterday and it says in aqualog they can sometimes be confused with 183 but your fish is a lot more striking than mine. problem with 059 is that there are a lot of colour variations although Planet Catfish only shows one pic unfortunately. :( Just hope mine turns out jet black with the white edging to look something like your 183's!! I'd be ove rthe moon then, congrats again on the bargain, hope the breeding goes well!! :good:
