2 New Cockatiels! iPictures Addded!

How much time did these birds spend in a cage before you started handling them?

We adopted a 5 year old Nanday Conure who had never been out of her cage...ever. We did not handle her until she was ready. Everyday, we opened up her cage, and left it open. Gradually, she made her way out. After that success, we would give her small treats, and pet her a little at a time. She eventually got used to human touch, but it took almost a year. It takes time for them to adjust to something they have never had. Abused birds especially need time to adjust. They look at everyone as an enemy because all they know is bad times.

I would suggest to let them go at their own pace. Sometimes forcing them to socialize after they have had any kind of trauma is not a good idea. They will let you know when they are ready. And, when they are not, which is why there is biting.

You can also try stick training with perches. They need to start learning "step up" and "step down".

Good Luck, and keep up the diary. I would love to see their progress.

Well once again this failed! :/

she bit me again and once again drew blood.... :-(

This is starting to hurt a lot.

Today it sounded like she was getting tourcher

I put her in the carpet floor on the hallway and made this sound I have never heard. Like if she was getting tourchered. Anybody know whats wrong?

I did the finger training today and bit the stick and wouldnt let go.....

theres no improvement.....

try with a glove on a thick one and let them bite the snot out of you, maybe they'll eventually figure out your not trying to hurt them, the biting is defence and i'm guessing you pull your finger back right away which to them is going to seem like there doing a good job, go from the front so they see you coming

or try giving them treats but make it just out of their reach and make it so your finger is the only thing they can climb on to reach it

I would recommend against the glove. It will encourage the bad behavior of biting. Stick training or just letting the bird come when it is ready is better.
